The reign of Archduke K=E6duric was built upon a crumbling foundation =
and ultimately the dispute between K=E6duric's sons rended the realm in =
two. Personally K=E6duric was courageous and clear headed, and this =
prevented catastrophe during his own reign. However, the Archduke was =
also sell-willed and impetuous, and administration passed into the hands =
five courtiers. The power of such a group naturally aroused resentment =
and jealousy; and an opposition party made progress under one of =
K=E6duric's uncles, Thomas Prefect of Sorerntier. The ensuing struggle =
for control was to result in actual fighting more than once, and was the =
forerunner of a similar conflict which divided Tournen from Alamie.

Thomas of Sorentier and his allies brought the Archduke's favorites to =
trial for treason before the Baronial Council of Alamie. This, like the =
Provisions of Diemerel in 341 and the Counts Ordainers of 408, proved to =
be short-lived aristocratic efforts to master Alamie. After a year of =
this rule, K=E6duric suddenly announced that he would govern by his own =
hand and dismissed his uncle and his followers, promising to avoid the =
domination of his ministers. He did so without bloodshed; and there =
followed a period of cooperation between the Archduke and the Baronial =
Council lasting eight years.

It was in 409 MR that K=E6duric's mother died. She had been a moderating =
influence on her son and without her, K=E6duric's incautious nature =
unmade his realm. The Archduke mourned his mother lavishly, and =
attempted to take some comfort in an lavish court. This resulted in that =
frequent source of discord, baronial criticism of court extravagance. =
Whatever the cause; whether this thwarting of his imperious will or the =
loss of his mother, to whom he was deeply attached; K=E6duric showed =
himself a despot who crushed all opposition, even that of Alamien law. =
He exiled his uncle and executed several of his friends; he overawed the =
Baronial Council with four hundred archers, so that it meekly yielded to =
his demands. His forced loans and other arbitrary decrees were deeply =
irritating. It was during this time that K=E6duric took as a lover Lady =
Calle, daughter of the count of Pechalinn.=20

K=E6duric may have been smitten by Lady Calle, but he was already =
married to Morissa Berran of Soerlies, a marriage arranged by the =
Archduke's uncle Thomas. The count of Pechalinn was a worthy man, loyal =
to the Archduke and opposed to the Prefect Thomas and his party. =
Recently, Archduke K=E6duric had made the count Steward of the Realm, =
and so the count's daughter entered life at court. In K=E6duric's mind =
his wife represented his subordination to others: his uncle, his wife's =
powerful family, the nobles. In 411, Lady Calle bore K=E6duric a son she =
named Daulton. For appearances sake, she remained in her father's =
household, in the aristocratic quarter in Haes.=20

Four years later, in 415, Morissa bore K=E6duric a son, which was named =
Berric, who was raised in K=E6duric's house as his heir. Morissa was an =
eminently appropriate archduchess, possessing grace, learning, dignity, =
and a major bloodline. Unfortunately, Berric's inheritance was more his =
mother's abrasive disposition and her unconcealed deceitfulness, than =
her self control and mental discipline. Given his character, it is not =
surprising that Berric was unable to the avoid the problems that plagued =
his father.=20

Having angered his nobles with arbitrary decrees and confiscatory =
measures, Archduke K=E6duric was becoming isolated, and his base of =
support was shrinking. As it became more difficult for him to manage =
affairs he came to rely on the Archprelate of the Western Imperial =
Temple, Deniel Hildon. Despite his earlier promise to avoid allowing a =
another to dominate his government, K=E6duric gave the direction of =
policy over to the Archprelate. Deniel began to select key appointments =
and chose the actions into which K=E6duric would invest his regency. =
Further, the Archduke had become involved in the conflict between the =
Archduke of Boeruine and the Prince of Avanil. Despite having a secure =
border against Boeruine and an exposed border facing Avanil, Archduke =
K=E6duric took up arms against Avanil. Records show that in 439, near =
the end of his reign, Alamie owed 182 GB, over three years income of the =
realm. K=E6duric's costly rule and subservience to the Western Imperial =
Temple renewed efforts to subordinate the powers of the Archduke of =
Alamie to the Council of Barons.=20

By this time, his sons Berric, the named heir, and Daulton, the =
illegitimate son, were developing followings of their own. Berric was =
dominated by his mother's family the House of Berran, now holding the =
title Barons of Maesor with extensive holdings in the south east of the =
realm. The Baron of Maesor believed they should guide policy, and not =
the Archprefect. While the Archduke was dependent on his Berran =
relatives both in the provinces of Tuor's Hold, Maesford, and Traiward, =
but also because his brother-in-law, Levan Berran was an able commander =
of the army, K=E6duric feared vesting more power in his wife's family. =
His son, Berric, however, championed the cause of his Berran kinsman.=20

Meanwhile Daulton was gathering support in the army itself. Blessed with =
charisma and humanity which both inspired the soldiers and won their =
admiration, Daulton was also a skilled warrior. Having justly won =
accolades during the war with Avanil, Daulton was favored by birth and =
ability to high position in the army. Naturally the conflict between =
Daulton and the House of Berran was a rift that further divided Alamie's =
nobility. Levan Berran, Marshal of Alamie, would have been happy to end =
Daulton's career in the army, but K=E6duric was proud of his elder son. =
Further, K=E6duric always considered legitimizing Daulton as a =
counterweight to Berran power.=20

What ultimately set the stage for the War of the Brothers was the =
alliance between the House of Berran and the diplomatic legate from =
Endier, Kalien. At that time, Kalien, a half-elf, was lieutenant to the =
House of Endier. Kalien suggested a scheme to reorganize the debt of =
Alamie. The half-elf would organize financing the scheme, and the Baron =
of Maesor would become Lord Treasurer of Alamie. The enemies of the =
Berrans, notably the counts of Pechalinn, Ghonallison, and Soutmoor, as =
well as the apparatus of the Western Imperial Temple began to demand the =
humbling of the Berrans. Kalien organized a plot to ruin the Steward by =
inventing treasonous evidence. The count of Pechalinn was tried by the =
Council of Barons and executed for treason. For this attack on his =
grandfather, Daulton was understandably bitter.=20

Archprefect Deniel recognized that the realm was in a precarious =
position and bitterly divided against itself. He correctly surmised that =
Kalien was a source of trouble and arranged for the regent of Endier to =
post their lieutenant to another position. The Archprefect also =
advocated a step that had profound consequences, the legitimization of =
Daulton. K=E6duric issued a decree acknowledging his elder son, though =
the Council of Barons forced him to issue a rider which barred Daulton =
from succession to the archduchy.=20

In the romantic tales of the bards and poets, a romance is at the center =
of the War of the Brothers. Aside from these tales, there is no evidence =
that Daulton and Berric loved Lanalle Flaertes simultaneously. Lanalle =
was the daughter of the count of Monsedge, and she certainly would have =
traveled in court circles which would have included both Berric and =
Daulton. Though it is considered probable that Lanalle's romance with =
Berric was long ended by the time she met Daulton, but no clear evidence =
exists either way. Nevertheless, the true causes of the War of the =
Brothers, as this horrible civil war is called, are more complicated =
than a love triange.=20

When K=E6duric died, his successor lacked his clear headedness and =
personal courage. Berric gave in to his impetuous nature and lacked the =
strength to extracate himself from the difficulties this got him into. =
Berric, more than his father ever had been, was dominated by others. He =
was unable to resist his Berran kinsman's desire to lash out at their =
political enemies and their demands for high office. Berric's =
grandfather was made Lord High Treasurer, which enriched the personal =
fortune of the Baron of Maesor as much as Kalien's financial plan saved =
Alamie from bankrupcy. Measures were begun against Archprefect Deniel, =
but they were abandon in light of his character, reputation and =
influence. Daulton was relived of all his state offices. The House of =
Pechalinn was once again a victim of archducal powers. A corresponsance =
between the new count of Pechalinn, Alban, Daulton's uncle, and the =
Archduke of Boeruine was discovered. The lands of the Pechalinn's were =
confiscated, though count Alban escaped to Boeruine, where he was =
welcomed.=20

It appeared to most outside observers that the Berrans had consolidated =
their power and eliminated their enemies, but infact that had turned all =
the other noble houses against them. It was a chance event which touched =
off the civil war which followed. A peasant uprising in Alaroine during =
the coincidental sabbatical of Archduke Berric there. The Archduke was =
captured by the peasants, who demanded he reform the manroial courts, =
abolish judicial torture, and remove the Berrans from power. Berric was =
terrified and agreed to everything.

However when word of the regents fate traveled west it became exagorated =
and rummors of Berric's death circulated widely. The count of =
Ghonallison sought out Daulton in Moonsedge where he was hiding out, and =
where his wife, Lanelle was giving birth to a daughter, Tel=E6na. =
Ghonallison convinced Daulton that the nobles would welcome him as their =
new regent, now that Berric was dead. Without confirming the news of =
Berric, Daulton publicly declared himself Archduke of Alamie and began =
organizing supporters and troops in the event the Berrans contested his =
claims.=20

As it turned out Berric had fallen into the hands of the count of =
Alaroine who put down the peasant revolt. Alaroine and his allies had =
demands of their own. They demanded the elimitation of Berran power and =
the subordination of Archducal power to the Council of Barons. Again =
Berric agreed to everything that was set before him. When word arrived =
that Daulton had claimed the Archduchy, he decalred Daulton in a state =
of treasonous rebellion, and signed a warrent for his execution. Berric =
remained in the hands of the nobility and carried out his purge of his =
Berran kinsman. His grandfather was imprisoned in his own ancestoral =
castle, his brother-in-law was stripped of all his offices and titles; =
he was count of Traiward as well as Marshal. While these reforms pleased =
the nobles throughout Alamie, they also weakened its powers to deal with =
Daulton.=20

The people of Pechalinn rose in Daulton's favor, stormed the offices of =
royal officials and killed the sheriff installed by Berric. Dauton's =
uncle returned and joined the rebel cause. The count of Ghonallison was =
also counted a treasonous rebel, and was absolutly tied to Daulton's =
cause. Daulton's father-in-law, the count of Monsedge also supported the =
rebel cause. Much of the army came over to Daulton, including such =
notable commanders as Owen Lar=E6th and Braedonnal Tuare. Given their =
weakened position militarily, Berric's forces adopted the dubious policy =
of pillaging the villages of Daulton's allies.=20

Daulton quickly occupied all the lands west of the river Tuor, but was =
unable to remain east of that barrier. During the interveaning year, =
Berric, with the full support of the nobles in the east had rebuilt the =
military of Alamie. Now well advanced in years, the Archprelate =
attempted to intervene once more in Alamien politics. He proposed giving =
Daulton the title of duke and exacting a loyalty oath from him in =
exchange for an end to the war with the entire realm in Barric's hands. =
Barric prevaricated and Daulton refused outright. Shortly after the =
Archprelate offered a second plan, divide the realm along the River Tuor =
into two realms. This, Daulton embraced and Barric refused. Daulton went =
on to declare his realm independent and claimed the title "duke of =
Tuornen".=20

The final battle of the War of the Brothers was fought in Alamsreft, a =
new province formed at the secession from lands of the Baron of Maesor. =
In a sea of struggling bodies, past blood-slickened armor and shattered =
spears, Daulton and Berric fought toward each other. When they met they =
exchanged terrible, unrestrained blows. At the last, Berric smashed =
Daulton's sword away. But as the archduke raised his blade for the coup =
de gr=E2ce, Daulton drew a dagger from his belt and plunged it deeply =
into his brother's heart. The war was over.

Daulton did not press for reunification, though he did demand that the =
regents of Alamie accept Tournen's independance and accept the lessor =
title, "duke of Alamie" as a recognition for all time that the archduchy =
was divided.=20
