Artifact: The Chalice of Haely
A lot of people on this mailing list seem to use the idea that a
deviration can change when commiting bloodtheft on characters with a
higher bloodline. Does this mean that a beginning awnshegh can change
his fate by finding a higher blooded character with an other deviration?
That would a very good, though evil way out of it and to my idea a
little bit to easy.

I play that the bloodline of Azrai can corrupt any other bloodline. I don't
have it work the other way, nor do I let Azrai's bloodline corrupt someone else
with Azrai's bloodline. If someone with Azrai's bloodline were to commit
bloodtheft on another person with the same derivation his bloodline would not
change any more than is normal through bloodtheft.

Well, I play that Azrai's blood is the most potent of the seven lines. Since
so little history is given of the dim and murky past of Deismaar (with good
reason), I've gone my own way and placed the Adurians as being incredibly
powerful when compared to the other races. They had to be, else they would not
have been able to chase six entire civilizations off the southern continent.
By all rights and inference, the Adurian nations outnumbered ALL of the
Cerilian humans by about 2 to 1, at least.
So, because Azrai had more worshipers, he had more power, and thus more was
distributed when he "died." (The Shadow IS returning) I track Azrai blood
score seperate of everything else (the other lines are none strong enough to
"absorb" each other, except in usurpation, when the line of the slayer
overcomes the line of the victim). Whenever BT occurs, I roll a percentage
chance equal to Azrai Blood Score. Lower, they are consumed and incompatible
powers are transformed, plus they instantly gain the Bloodform (trait?)
"ability" that creates an awnshegh's form.
I agree with the Complete Systems mystery author (what IS your name, friend?)
that Bloodtheft is evil, much to the chargin of my players. They want the
power, and they want to be good, too. Kind of like wanting forgiveness without
having to pay for it, a symptom of modern American culture.
I allow "Usurpation" by my PCs on a few notorious circumstances. The first is
that they came up with a whopper of a good reason for it. One PC is a...
visionary, who believes that Azrai is returning from the dead. He believes
that when the Shadow returns, it will claim all the power left in the land,
taking it back from the corners of Cerilia it has seeped to. So, by allowing
an awnshegh's bloodgift to seep back into the land, they allow Azrai all that
much more strength when He comes back. The choices are simple, then, take it
upon themselves, or leave it for the Enemy to regain.
You can understand why they are very eager to get their hands on something that
will "purify one's bloodline". The perception is that a scion of Brenna will
keep a Brenna bloodline, though this is far from the truth.
I'd like some comment about the artifact itself, too.
Thanks!

This doesn't fit well with what the BoP says regarding Haelyns Aegis.
According to
the BoP; Haelyns Aegis didnt begin to splinter from form the Orthodox
Temple until
after the death of Michael Roele (950HC) & the fall of the Empire. It was
also my
impression, though I can't find anything confirming it now, that the
Northern Imperial
Temple was the first to split from the Orthodox Temple. That didn't occur
until 1297HC.
Sorry to be so nit-pickey, but I've recently been compiling all of the
historical information
I can get my hands on in an Excell spreadsheet & the dates are fresh in my
head.

For the most part, I really like the history of the artifact, but I've got
some problems
with this part. Though, given the side effects of the artifact, Avan's
action seem perfectly
believeable, I think the members the Holy order would turn on him if he
tried to declare
war on the empire. (At least at a time when the empire still existed). If
this episode were
to happen at some later point, after the dissolution of the empire, I think
it would be quite
feasible. I'd say circa 1300HC, deffinately after Fitzlan & the split of
the NIT.
Perhaps instead, Avan actually declares himself emperor. And being that
there is no
emperor, the members of the order would be much less likely to turn on him.
In fact, they'd
probably be inclined to flock to his cause- the restoration and 'cleansing'
of the empire!
The thought of an obvious fanatic like Avan (and his Holy Army), claiming
the Iron Throne would surely be enough to cause the other nobles to go to
war. I'm sure
his uncle (brother, cousin, whatever) the Prince of Avanil would be
mobilizing his armies
to protect 'His' claim. Boeruine as well. The end result would be the
same, he'd hang from
the neck like a commoner & the chalice would eventually be lost.
What does everyone else think?

Artifact: The Chalice of Haely
Hallo!
It seems my mailer is treating me like gold once again.... I got all the
replies to this message, but missed the original post. Could some one be a
peach and send me a copy. (I'm sure there's more 'messy mailbox' types out
there....)
Thanks.

Well, my reply is prolly a bit late, but then I'm a bit behind my
mail...
IMC I only use the corrupting rule for Azrai derivation. As has
already been said, Azrai was the most powerful of the gods, and thus
his blood is much more potent. This means, bloodline corruption is a
one-way process. As good ol' Yoda said, "once you start down the dark
path, forever shall it consume you". It actually hasn't happend so
far (only 2 instances of bloodtheft), but I'd prolly strip a
character of the incompatible powers at once, while the blood of
Azrai slowly manifests. This means the character will gain the new
abilities one by one. It could be fun picking abilities that are
"similar" to old ones. "Healing" could become "touch of decay" ...
while the character is sitll not aware of the change... "So you want
to heal him?" MWAHAHAHA
comments welcome
