The Gorgon`s Next Target
The problem I see with expanding into the Giantdowns is that there's nothing
THERE. Richer targets, in terms of gold, magic, and blood, are nearby. I
could see an invasion of the downs, but only as a means of access to Dhoesone
and the Rjurik heartlands. Until someone builds them up, I doubt the Gorgon
would strike there.
The most frightening target--especially as a conquered vassal--is Rohrmarch.
That places the Gorgon's armies on the edge of Khinasi and gives him a port on
the Gulf of Coeranys. The Chimaeron would fall quickly, and suddenly the
Gorgon has a back door into Anuire.

I think Kiergard itself is vulnerable, let alone advancing out into
Rohrmarch. By way of explanation I will offer a little more of the history
of my campaign.
After the Gorgon needed to rebuild what forces he lost in the Sielwode, he
demanded additional dwarven production, since Mur-Kilad could not keep up.
So he kidnapped some dwarven smiths from Baruk-Azhik. All the players and
some of the regent's lieutenents advanced into Kiergard and rescued the
captive dwarves in Fellport. From then on the Gorgon continued to send
spies and occasionaly attempt to menace the dwarves in a variety of ways.
Given the locatio n of my campaign, I decided to alter the time-line on the
civil war in the Rohrmarch, I played out the printed backstory before the
players eyes and ears. While menacing the players with the many issues I
brought before them [guild complaints, clan complaints, nobles grumbling,
Osoerde, the Gorgon, sundered dwarves in the Chimaeron asking for
assistance, dwarven resistance to his human companions, the Orogs, evil
Cults, saber rattling from Binsada] I happened to mention that the King of
Rohrmarch was killed by a minor awnshegh called the Boar. At first they
payed it only a little attention. However as more information trickled in
about the two factions, and then an assasination of a guild master
Frodenrich Buschassen, seemed to divid all of Rohrmarch into two hostile
factions. It was now that one of the most influential clans really began to
exert influence on the regent of Baruk-Azhik and swayed the dwarven realm
behind the Prince of Oden and Kirk Warkinde. It certianly didn't hurt that
one of the human companions of the Overthane was a priest of Kirken.
After that players started hearing about a new force in the Thuringode,
Brand Mournsinger. The campaign ended before I revealed to the players that
Brand was the brother of one of the players PC's who had died earlier in the
campaign. The trajectory was for Brand to lead a guerilla band to Esden
(where a city still stood) and during a ruthless siege and storm, level the
place and destroy the citadel (hence the ruins). The Gorgon's forces would
then advance and Mournsinger would fall back to the Thuringode, but
depending on the advice of the PC priest of Kirken to Kurt Warkinde, and the
actions of the Overthane of Baruk-Azhik, some very interesting developments
were possible, not to mention the remaining wildcards of the Vampire and
Swordhawk.
My perception is there are too many anti-Gorgon forces bordering Kiergard.
Perhaps in a campaign where the elves remained dormant, and the dwarves were
too busy dealing with the Orogs to come out and play... But I saw the
begining of reverses for the Gorgon in Kiergard.

The Gorgon`s Next Target
Having the Gorgon run west-northwest through the Giantdowns or Rohrmarch
would take him further away from his ultimate goal, the Imperial City. The
Giantdowns also have no population for him to enslave as soldiers, or riches
to fund his conquests. a better move would be to make a vassal of Ghuralli,
and let him worry about that flank. Expanding south from Kiergard to
Rohrmarch would lengthen the "back door" that may be vulnerable to
Mournsinger's revolt.
What I think he really wants is to move southwest to Avanil. At the
moment, he holds a province of Tuarhievel, and now the (disinherited) Prince
of same. Perhaps this is a prelude to "neutralizing" the sidhe and opening
the Ruide River to his forces. All of those dwarven metal-workers that we
hear are missing: are they making boat equipment and siege engines for a
thrust down the Ruide to Cariele and Dhoesone? Both are politically weak,
with quarrelling guilds to distract the rulers. By holding Cariele, he (or a
minion) will have a pass through the Stonecrowns, granting the ability to
spill onto the central plains of Anuire's Heartlands. While Dhoesone isn't
"truly" an Anuirean realm, it does grant access to the Tael Firth, allowing
naval activity along the Western Coast.
Hmmm. This might move into my campaign someday. Especially if the White
Witch is also fomenting dissension along the River for her own purposes.
Lee.

According to some material I read (KotGD, I think), the nature of the downs,
especially downs that exist just inside the Gorgon's Crown border prevent
invasion. Apparently, they are "haunted" pretty bad and most of his troops
don't want anything to do with messing with those things.
Besides, what else is there of interest to the Gorgon in the Giant Downs?
Hardly any Anuireans, no organized kingdoms of power. Mostly just unruly
bands of really vicious monsters and a few Rjurik settlers.
My campaign does take place in the Giant Downs, so this is how I've dealt with
the question.
