Thread: Digging In
10-14-1998, 01:42 AM #1The OlesensGuest
After reading the Castle Guide, DMG supplement, and watcing Braveheart I came up with a
few holes in the Birthright Battle System. If you are being shot at by enemy arrows, a
ditch is a good place to take cover, esspecially if you cover it with logs. What about
shoving some spears in the ground in front of you to slow down charaging cavalry? And
what happened to infantrymen who had pikes hidded in the grass by thier feet? Or fill
several trenches with oil and shoot fire arrows at them when the enemy is walking over
them. All of these tasks could be preformed by most any soldier with a shovel and an axe
and probably within a week, given enough men. And how about a unit of shield bearers
(Summon Soldier, 0/3, Banding :)? Why not dig tunnels made to collapse and spiked pits?
Well these are my comments and suggestions concerning Birthright's Combat System. They
are all easily implimented previous to a battle and can be a good idea if the regent is
expecting an attack but doesn't have time for a castle. A soldier in a trench in
vonerable if someone gets close but much safer from enemy fire.

It is not such a bad idea to include shield bearers into the not quite
sufficient realm of war cards. I have personally been sing shield bearers in
my campaigns for the last one and a half year, and yes; they worked well.
They have definitely not become the most popular troop type, but they were
never ment to be.
The rules I use is that the shield bearer is not a unit of it's own but
works as an attachment to a preselected missile unit. It adds one to the
unit's defense and melee. It is destroyed along with the parent unit.
Hope this is useful for you
