Let me just start out by saying I love the BR giants. I use them against
my players all the time. They're mysterious, old, wise, and devious. They
also hate the elves, the dragons, and everyone else who used to compete with
them, now they hate humans too.
Elves and dragons can cast magic without being blooded. In fact, they
cast the same type, so it would appear they learned it from each other, or
    developed it in parallel.
Now, the giants have been around as long as the elves and the dragons in
Cerilia. What is to prevent them from knowing some old magic. True mages
without bloodlines, maybe even source holdings without bloodlines, like the
dragons. In my campaign, the gians up near Dhoesone are fighting to
recapture some old stone circles that they, in cooperation with the
halflings, built a long time ago. These act as portals to the shadow world
if used properly. Anybody like this?

    Hello all,
I've had BR giants who were druids before, but I never thought of them as
sorcerors. This seems to offer lots of possibilities. Do your giants draw
their magical powers from the Evanescence (the barrier that separates
Cerilia and the Shadow World), or possibly even the Shadow World itself?

It might be interesting to say the giants' magic has slowly died out as the
Shadow World has become corrupted and desolate. This could be the reason
they want to recapture the portals into the SW. Perhaps there could be a
way to bring life back to at least a small corner of the SW, rekindling
some of the giants old power. That could be the source of a great series
of adventures, although I'm not sure too many PCs would want to see the
giants regain any of their former glory.....

It might be easier to get PCs involved with magic-using giants in an effort
to repair a weak spot in the Evanescence. Maybe the giants drew their
magical powers from this barrier in ages past, but they grew afraid that
they would weaken it to the point where the horrors of the Shadow World
could creep into Cerilia. They might become aware of a place where the
Evanescence was so weak that a portal was about to open between the two
worlds, and they might enlist the PCs to aid them in keeping such a
    disaster from happening.

Thanks for bringing it up, Daniel. I'm thinking of giants in a whole new
    light.

    Regards
    Craig

I took the old giant magic idea straight from King of the Giant Downs where
some ancient magics still resonate in the oldest tombs. Powerful magic which
originated from the giant waaaay back before elves came to power. Also, I
noticed that especially the Cerilia-specific giants have spell abilities
and/or the ability to cast.... :)

    Later!
