I was once thinking about the use of gunpowder in BR and I came up with a possible solution. Perhaps gunpowder reacts poorly to the casting of magic. For whatever reason, whenever a spell is cast within a certain distance, the gunpowder ignites and explodes violently (as if it were under
pressure). Thus, even a simple cantrip could destroy a ship filled with gunpowder...and realm spells would cause explosions in several places throughout the province. The Anuireans and others quickly realized that hauling gunpowder around was hazardous to one's health. Despite several
experiments to find a secure way of protecting the powder, no one has yet come up with a solution. Therefore, gunpowder, despite its potential, is not common and most people keep a safe distance from the stuff. In fact, most people haven't even heard of it.
I was once toying with the idea of letting the Adurians use gunpowder, but not have Priests or Wizards. And I didn't want the PCs to be able to keep any gunpowder they got their hands on. Heh, at first the Adurians would seem quite powerful, until a wizard cast a cantrip to get to that itch he
can't reach...

Who do you think is dicking around with gunpowder anyway. If you allow it in
your campaign I would almost certainly rule it to be one of the magic
ingredients in most spells that do "boom".
Most mages would therefore be totally conversant with the peculiarities of
the black powder (after their research lab has been blown to smithereens for
the tenth time certainly).
It would take some pretty rare individual with a pretty large research grant
and a lot of determination to continue working on the idea of things that do
boom to your enemies. The idea that the Anuireans would try something like
this would seem quite improbable to me. Now the Brecht are a different story
in a quest for new marketgoods I could see one of them sponsoring local
inventors. Who knows somebody might discover the printing press, the
watertoilet, paperclips, or skates.
And by the way who says that mages aren't using the same natural principles
for their spells as we (RW) are exploiting using our technology.
Remember any magecraft advanced enough beyond that currently in use in
Birthright would seem like technology to them.

Sorry, I don't live nearby, but I'm sure you're local games store has it, or
can order it, or you could order it online.

Jan, please explain dimension door spells using the same principles that we
exploit in our technology. All it is possible to explain some of the
simpler spells with technology, it gets very difficult when you start
violating conservation of mass and energy, not to mention the principle that
entropy always increases.

Well, I haven't mentioned that the PCs in my campaign recently destroyed all the
Cerilian gods in a battle called Second Deismaar and became the gods themselves, but
that's another story....
(I'm kidding, I'm kidding! Don't anybody freak out. Not one of the PC's in my
campaign is higher than 11th level, and that's the thief.)
