If you have a holding 0, that gives you a small amount of influence in the
realm, so you can spend RPs to oppose or support the actions of other rulers in
    the domain.

And, yes, it is enough to have a trade route.

Additionally, it's the stepping stone for other actions. You need a 0
level holding to contest another holding. (Very key point).

Don't forget the power of contesting, and then investing another's holding
    to one's self.

You stage espionage from them and build trade routes. It can be easily wiped
out, however, so I always suggest ruling it up, if possible.

Also, espionage actions are limited to one province outside of provinces
where you have holdings, I believe, so having holdings in neighbor's
territories allows you to do espionage further within their country
(perhaps in the capital city?). For further ideas, you can see the "Create
Covert Holding" alternate Realm Action in the Birthright Netbook.

A 0 level holding can be used to contest other holdings in the area,
guilds can be used to set up trade routes and sources can be used to
    extend ley lines.

From my not-always-entirely-reliable memory. It seems to be that it was
part of the rules for espionage, but it may only apply to a certain type
of espionage. Or, hey, I just thought of it. It applies to scout units
doing their espionage-like activity. Unfortunately, I'm not currently
playing BR right now, so some of the rules may tend to get a bit garbled
    in my head.
