As for animals not absorbing the power: Not true, there are a few examples
in Blood Enemies. I am writing about what I can remember top of my head:
Haelyn (i think it was) had a war horse. It wasd pretty close to the
epicenter of the gods destruction, and it actually absorbed some of the
power. It was last recorded seen in the seamist mountains some 300 years
ago. It is known as the Pegasus.

I MIGHT be mistaken, but I am almost 100% sure that it is so. In any event,
I would rule, that if an animal was close enough to the epicenter, then it
would have been affected by the divine power.

The last sentence gave me idea though. "The land is likely to have absorbed
the essense of the dead gods"....

Imagine, a group of travelers making camp in a rather desolated place.
During the night one of they companions disappear. Investigations reveal
that he was 'taken' by the land, because he defiled it during the night.
This could be a great adventure, or it could be a
'The-DM-is-tired-of-the-characters-go-make-some-new-ones' adventure. Either
way it is an idea to explore further in my oppinion.
