Yup. Holdings give regency only to certain classes, but anybody
can make money. =) Mages with very powerful sources (level 7+) can also
use them to make trade routes; however, since the province level on at
least one end is then probably going to be quite low, they may not make
very much money from them.
Here's a thought: do you need the source (7) to *maintain* a trade
route, or just to make it? For example, if the province increases in
level, or you made the route in the first place after using Enhance Source
and/or a mebhaighl stone?

I assume by this you are talking about Mages who control only source and do
not actually rule a domain? Sorry to sound dumb but Mages do get tax as
normal from a domain if they are its regent don't they? And likewise with
guilds?
(Just getting a little confused as I am new to this)

In the Illien Sourcebook, they show a Source and it looks like Stoneage
(well, you know, the druidic rooks that're in England). I would say that
the whole province has its magic that can be used only if you control a
special place where you can tap (or untap) the magic.

Sources are the places where the magical energy of the planet collects
and can be tapped. mebhaighl exists across the whole planet however in
certain places rich in magic it collects enough to be tapped by a
wizard.
They way I like to look at is to see mebhaighl as a stream of life that
flows across the world and sources as deep pools in that stream where
the flow stops and swirls around. Then you look at a wizard as a
fishermen who is fishing for eels, which can be found only in the deep
pools. So he throws in his fishing line (creates a source) and can catch
the eels (tap the source).
And when the population level of the province goes up these pools are
drained, or dry up and the wizard can no longer tap them.
Hmmmm just remembering the days back in New Zealand when we used to
catch eels in the creaks. Yummy, smoked eel.

Hmmm. That's interesting. What do sources and ley lines look like? I haven't
seen anything official that would answer this question, so from what I can tell
we are well into the vast, uncharted Realm of Opinion here. Here's what I think:
Is the whole province considered magical? I'd say no. Mebhaighl courses through
the ground, but I don't think that means it can be detected to someone with a
simple Detect Magic spell. Otherwise, the whole area would light up like the 4th
of July when a mage used one, right? I think only the regent in control of a
source should be able to see the actual magical power. Sure, anybody can see the
circle of stones, sylvan spring, mountainous peak, etc. that provides the source,
but I don't think any old mage/magician could see the actual magical power. It's
a higher form of magic that should require not only a bloodline but regency to be
able to detect. An investiture spell, the transferal of regency to an heir, the
creation of a new source holding, stuff like that.
What do ley lines look like? That's a little tougher. Personally, I don't think
someone other than a regent could see a ley line either. First, I think it would
be invisible for the same reasons noted above for sources. Second, I think it
would probably travel through the earth rather than through the air. Since the
land itself is magical, wouldn't the transfer of energy travel through the earth
rather than above it?
I suppose one could try to intersect the ley line and dig a hole to find it, but
I don't know that that is really how a ley line works. It need not be a laser
like beam of light. It could be spread thinly over an area of land so that even
if one could detect it, it would seem like a vague, shimmery glow or look like
just the dew on the grass.
I kind of like the idea of a ley line having a physical manifestation. I think
it should be something natural, though. The stream running down from the sylvan
spring, the wind rushing through an ancient forest. That's kinda cool.
"Ever since that wizard showed up the fog comes in off the lake every mornin'
regular as can be...."
That works for me. But I don't think the actual magical energy could be seen by
nonblooded, nonregent, nonmage characters.
Laters,
Gary
