    Contesting Castles?

Thats true, as long as you see at the BR rules, but in reality a castle was
the base for "law holdings" and the ownership over the castle was the key to
owning the province. Sadly the BR rules aren't made to be as it was in RL, a
bit more could have been done about the castles/fortifications in BR, but
something which I think is important is that the rules should be as simple as
possible. That has been AD&D strength (hopefully we don't have to see a 3rd
edition of AD&D which reminds about "players options: combat and tactics").

    - ->taken by political maneuvering (role-played betrayal, royal decree, etc.) or
    - ->siege.

    It's a bit sad that AD&D don't have any siege rules :(

Funny you should ask this question, it was hashed over in some detail
    just last week.

Here is my take on this.

The action involved is "Fortify". The rules say "Any type of holding
can be fortified" (p55). Ok, Under castles it says "Fortification of a
province creates a new holding for that area: a castle."(also p55).

Now, the way I see it, only the owner of the holding can fortify it.

If you want to allow any regent to fortify any other regent's holdings
then you MIGHT run into the problem of multiple regents with castles,
but frankly, I just don't see it.

Has anyone been faced by the problem of two different regents wanting
to build two different castles in the same province -- and what to do
    about it?

Sure. But the provincial regent has the final word. The people and resources
of the province are under his "control", supposedly. If the province is
contested, then neither of the regents can build it until the matter is
resolved. Of course, this is just what I would do. I'm sure others will have
    many other suggestions.

I'm pretty much of the opinion that you just CAN'T have two castles in one
realm. There's no way the local economy could ever support it.
Historically, and logically, there's no basis for it, anyway.
Additionally, the rules don't state hard rules against it, per se, but
there are certainly no rules to support such an action.

Note: This would naturally show up waaaaay in the back of the local
    newspaper...

Slight editorial correction: the operative word should be "two castles in
one PROVINCE" not "one realm". Sorry for any inconveniences this may have
    caused.
