Anyone can run a guild holding (in fact, any character class can have
any kind of holdings - although source holdings are both tricky to
find and rather pointless to non-wizards), but only thieves and
rangers actually gain RPs for guilds. As for dual class regents, I
dunno....
John.
"Once I was a lamb, playing in a green field. Then
the wolves came. Now I am an eagle and I fly in a
different universe."
"And now you kill the lambs," whispered Dardalion.
"No, priest. No one pays for lambs."

dual-class in birthright
I have a question that I hope some of you seasoned Birthright DM's out
there can help me with: Can a thief pc dual class to a mage and still
receive the Regency from all the guild holdings and trade routes that he
still has control of?
This may require a little background so here goes...
The pc is a level 9 thief, and a very profitable one at that, he decides
that he wishes to dual-class to a mage to increase his personal power.
The rules in the players handbook state that if he uses any of his old
abilities until he reaches level 10 would mean no exp. That is fine, he
likes, he can live with that and agrees to dual-class. Now since he is a
level 9thief/level 1 mage he can only use the skills and abilities of
the mage class until level 10. Can he still receive the regency from his
guilds and such that only thieves are allowed, since he is a thief/mage
or does he really have to wait til level 10 to suddenly receive regency
from holdings he has already.
I hope I have explained this right, hehe.
I would be very greatful for ant help or advice anyone give offer.
Thanks

In my own opinion, and experience, you only get the RPs once you have
surpassed your old class and become a "true" Dual-Classed character.
I.E. your 9th level thief becomes a 1st level Wizard. He can no longer use
his Thief abilities without penalty in game play (adventures and the like).
IMO, that also means he doesn't recieve "thief" RPs until he becomes a
10th level Wizard, and is able to use his thief abilities again without
penalty.
If he had planned ahead (saved RPs, worked on getting Sources and a good
relationship with a 'real' Wizard, etc), then this won't be a drawback. If
he didn't plan ahead, he's in a world of hurt.
Sounds like your Thief/Wizard is in a world of hurt.

Right on this score: he wouldn't loose his Holdings. Any Regent can control
any type of Holding (including fighters controling sources, though they
wouldn't get any benifit from them unless they had a Louie to use 'em).
But he wouldn't get any RPs from 'em, IMO.

That's a tough one. Technically, as I understand it, running a guild
holding is not necessarily a thief ability. I believe any class can run a
guild holding. Therefor, he would not necessarily lose control of his
holdings. However, there might be a rule in the books on this that I'm not
familiar with about dual classing regents.

Yes, the dual class character would recive regencypoints like he would have
been a multiclass character.

The only holding which is classbound is the source holdings (only way for a
none mage can have source holdings is by inherit them from someone else). Most
holdings generate money for the owner, even if you don't get regency for them.
A player who controlls both the Guild and Temple in his domain is guarantied a
good income.

If we read between the lines on the info on dual class it states (not exact
wording) that once his current class is higher then his previous class his
skills can be combine without penalty or something like that and I think it
should apply to regency points too

Why? THe only reason charachters get penalized for using old skills,
when lower level, is because they are trying to learn new ways of doing
things. I don't think there is that much conrtol over the power the
land that is magnetically (almost) drawn into you. THe rulebook states
that regents gain RP at the most favorable rating. THis comes from the
charachter's idea's and feelings that draw the RP (remember that RP is
only a game term and in BR reality it is just magical power, not like
money) to him. As long as the charachter follows the idea's and
feelings of both classes, why not have that power attracted to him (or
her.) In a case where a PC was trying to totally abolish his old class
(from himself) or was not folloowing his new class, then they would only
colloect part.

Master Ed has already told us once that dual classed resivec RP as if they
would have been multiclass characters, with other words, you get RP for all
your classes, no penalties for the first class is higher than the second.
It's like you would have two active Ethernet connection to your computer, via
both you will get bits, without you want it or not.
When talking about dualclasses, IMO there should be a limit on how many groups
you can dual from, like the limitation for multiclass characters, that you
can't have more than classes from three groups and no two from the same group.
I hope that the authors of BR materila would follow a such "rule". Not doing
like in FR, having alot of exceptions, like a human who is a multiclass
Fighter/Priest/Wizard/Bard. I wouldn't mind if humans would be limited to max
be dualclass in two classes (something/somthing_else), as thise characters
would become two powerful if they would be able to dualclass in upto four
classes, no racial advantiges and multiclass would be half as "powerful" as
that human. That would unbalance the game, exspecially if there would be a
such official NPC which happens to be highleveled in all classes.
