The Lost
I have been thinking a lot about The lost since they have come up so
much recently and I have a couple of thoughts and questions.
First, I like the concept of them being Entraped. In fact I had
already panned on using it in my game. I am using that as an
explination for Roesone's ban on logging in the Erbrinen (sp). One of
the lost is imprissoned in Roesone and the magic generated by the
ancient forest is part of the "chains" that bind him. Does this sound
logical to anyone else?
Second the lost wouldn't be blooded, would they? I was under the
impression that they recieved their powers before deismar as part of
some ritual or pact with Azrai. (I see them as something similar to the
Nazgul of LotR)
Third I was thinking that while they might not be necromancers persay.
Some of the dark gifts from the Complete book of Necromancers might be
appropriate for them.
some of this might have been covered in Tim's posting. I haven't read
it all yet, but I thought I'd throw this out there for response.
Thanks,
Kyle

That sounds like an excellent idea.

While the Lost wouldn't be blooded per se, they probably underwent a
ritual whereby they received a "shard" of Azrai, which will act pretty
much like a bloodline (i.e. allowing access to wizardly spells). It might
also grant some interesting "powers" that act like Blood Abilities. The
"dark powers" from the Necromancers book (which unfortunately I don't have
so I can't make specific recommendations) might be good canditates for
this, or you could simply use Azrai bloodline's blood abilities.

I guess they say that great minds think alike eh?
Just kidding. I do like one of theme being in Abbatuor or in one of the
Erebanien provinces of Aerenwe, though personally I think Marlae is just
more interested in sticking it to Orthien Tane. (Think mob when you think
him)
For my own bringing of the Lost back to Cerilia I am going to have my
players (still not yet regents) sucked along on a "quest" for a great "item
of power" by a "good and noble wizard". In actuality, the wizard is an
aspiring Sorcerer with Azrai's blood. This mad human wants one of the Lost
back as a teacher (he thinks he can control this prospective "pet").
The quest drags the PCs to the Drachenaurs, where they have a minor run it
with the Dragon of the Drachenaur Mountains (whatever his name is), and
eventually they find the entrance to an old dungeon.
A good old romp through a dungeon, with the PCs protecting their "friendly
mage", culminates in a central chamber with all forms of ancient writing.
I plan on one of the PCs to have some (vague) knowledge of the writing and
as the "good mage" begins "divining" from the altar the power of the hidden
item.
The truth becomes known the instant the scroll cast reversal of
Imprisonment is finished, and the "altar" splits wide to spew forth the
first unhindered Lost One in over 1200 years. Atar is back, and a bit
hungry.
Big fight, with the PCs losing horribly. They stumble deeper into the
dungeon as they run (if they are smart). Eventually this running battle is
halted by a great spectral form which drives Atar and his new slave off.
The PCs have stumbled on an ancient temple.
Here they are healed by the spectral guardians and given information on the
Lost, and finally the true nature of one PC is revealed, in that is of the
lost bloodline of Michael Reole, and the true heir to the Empire (hehehe)
Anyway - the rest is up to them at Atar and the Slave set out to free the
rest of the lost (and Atar makes a personal visit to El-Seighul - the only
one to remain "free", so they can have a nice long talk about some of the
things that happened 1300 years ago.)

Mark responded well on this point. However, I do have the CBoN, and yes,
the Dark Gifts make excellent plot hooks. I'm still using my Sorcerer
class, and in my mind they are blooded because they have a spark of Azrai
still in them. (besides, this also means that they wouldn't lose their
gift when Azrai died - as they were not really dependant upon him for its
maintenance)
Good Gaming - hope the above plot line spawns some ideas and I'd like
comments.

Actually, the Nazgul are already elsewhere in Cerilia: the
Magian's riders. The _Blood Enemies_ book states there are twelve of
them, and then names three, leaving Nine. =)

Now we make another fantasy literature reference: "The Lost" is
used in Robert Jordan's _Wheel of Time_ series to refer to a group of
powerful evil wizards who gave up some of their humanity to the Dark Lord
in exchange for power, and then were trapped with him when he was defeated
long ago. That series is probably a better place to plunder for those who
see them as ghul lords (which I think is a neat idea!) or other mostly
human, moderately self-willed beings than is LotR, as the Ulairi were
pretty clearly undead, very tightly controlled, and did not survive their
master.

Ah, I never thought of the spark you and mark both mentioned having the
same effect as blooded individuals would. It makes perfect sense and
would explain thier continued exsitnae quite neatly .
Thanks,
Kyle
