A New Magic Item - Stormreaver

    Stormreaver

Stormreaver appears to be only a bastard sword +1. Its blade is made of
gleaming steel, with a stylized lightning bolt etched along each side of
the blade. The crossguard is straight and marked with runes of power,
also made of steel. The hilt is wrapped in griffon's hide, and the pommel
is shaped like the claw of a bird of prey and clutches a large sapphire.

When used by a priest or paladin of Cuiraecen, however, its true powers
become apparent. It grants the wielder a +2 on saving throws versus wind,
lightning, or electricity. The user can also use the sword to predict
imminent weather patterns, once per week. Lastly, the sword acts as a
beacon to the faithful of Cuiraecen during battle, giving them a +1 bonus
to their morale checks if it is present.

Stormreaver was created by the first High Priest of the Church of Storm's
Height. Since then, it has been passed down to the ruling regent of that
Church. For a short time it was lost, during campaigns against the orogs
in the Chimaeron. Then it was recovered by a paladin of Cuiraecen named
Daeric Hireon, who returned it to the temple.

I'm going to give this to a PC for his initial magic item. He's the High
    Priest
of the Church of Storm's Height. ...what do you guys think? Overpowered?
    About right? Detailed enough?

i think the detail is good. i suspect your PC will be taking it into battle
often. at lower levels it is an appealing magic item, as are all magical
items to a low level charater. however, i think that there should be some
gems missing from the crossguard which, a higher levels, will make the sword
comparable to the character's level. perhaps 2 gems missing that can be
quested for one at a time and added in after months and years of research even
from many devoted followers. perhaps the sword is fine as it is now. but
what will happen when your PC finds a bastard sword +3 or +4? as a player i
might overlook the +1 to morale by the time i reach level 9 or so. the added
gems might boost the +2 to saves to include all magic, another to inspire the
followers to never fail a morale check, but that is all up to you and the
    future life of the PC.

    Shade:

Your Stormreaver is well thought out and an interesting item. Worthy
of questing or searching for by any follower of Cuiraecen, especially as an
holy artifact. I like the idea of items of interest that aren't earthshaking,
but would have religious significance for a particular group =)
As far as an initial gift, actually, with an item such as this, I would
make it a first quest to retrieve (using a similair preface to what you
offered before). Not that you need to listen to me -grin- but, I'd probably
    do something like this:
The player just took over leadership from a well loved or, at least,
respected ruler (conditions notwithstanding). Perhaps the commoners
and even nobles in the kingdom are a bit tenative and unsure of the new
regency. However, the player(s) learn of a recently lost relic that has
some symbolic meaning to many in the masses (coastal nation with
sailors? Cuiraecen temples and followers of note?). Thus, heroicly,
the new regent declares he will personally retrieve this holy artifact and
bring it back to the rightful arm of the nation and its leaders! What love
and acclaim he/she will receive when they return =)
An idea, any way. It wouldn't even have to be all that tough, but will
still prove to the masses that this regent is there for all they hold true.
    yadda yadda -grin-

Bret, I think this is an excellent idea. I think I'll try to do that, but I
dunno how my PC will respond to it. ;)

    Thanks,
