I'm considering starting a Birthright pbem, I know there are several eM-DM's
on the list, I was wondering if anyone had any advice for the best way to go
about it. If you don't want to clutter the list, email me privately.

I am going to publicly post my advice. DON'T DO IT.

Ok, having said that, and the reason I am doing this on the list, is
others may be considering it so, my comments will apply to all.

Don't try it until you are absolutely sure you have the time to do it.
And then, realize that you are wrong, because you don't have the time.
It is impossible to know how much time it takes to run one of the things
    until you are doing it.

If I were you, I'd not try it unless you have a partner on the
operation. Preferably one who lives within easy travel distance of you,
and with whom you can get angry and still maintain your friendship.

    Also, never throw anything away.

All that negative having been said, it is a very rewarding thing to do.
Once your game is running, it is great. It doesn't get easier though.

    Well, good luck,

    Tripp

UMmmm....I AGREE! 100%. No doubt, you think it's manageable, and then you
realize, it isn't. I've got access to a tremendous server, have a decent
web page, and I use a listserv, emphasize ICQ and AIM (for communication)
and have a chat board, and have just BARELY been able to keep my players
informed enough to where they want to stick around. I'm still hammering
out the kinks, and it's easily taken 5 times the effort and time I
expected, and that much more patience of my players to keep it alive.

The role playing aspects and player diplomacies are phenomonal over a
real-time instant messaging. The rewards are great, but be prepared to be
busy. I have set a standard for myself of getting back to players within
about 12 -24 hours, and have generally met that. It's tough though.
Basically, expect to spend about 30-40 hours a week on your PBeM at first.
That's why so many of them fail. For every ONE that succeeds, at least 5
    fail.

Thank heavens for patient wives, and lack of a social life.. :)

gads. where to start. Ok, I just got my Vosgaard PBEM (first in the
world!) up and running. the first turn was slow by 3 days because of the
massive amount of work I had to do to calculate actions. so, my first
suggestion is, make your players remember everything, calculate
everything, and send you everything for each domain turn. then all you
have to do is check it, say yes or no, and send it back.

the second largest time taker is updating the darn web pages. i finally
figured out how I'm going to do this - use Netscape Composer (with
netscape 4.03) so I can edit 'on-line'. that way I can jump around to
the different section, and actually see what things look like as I edit.
this keeps down the confusion that might arise from looking at the raw
    html.

finally, make sure you have lots of time. this is honestly going to take
a lot of hours out of your life. if you think you can do it now, make
sure you can do it later, during exams, during breaks, during the summer.
if you can't give the time to the game a month down the line, you will
be disappointing all your players. i've been in 4 different PBEMs that
died after the 2nd or 3rd turn because the DM suddenly couldn't give the
required time. I hated this, so don't you do it.

absolutely!!! 3 cheers for Tripp! I happen to be stuck doing this alone
because the nearest gamer that I know is 1 hour away, and doesn't have a
computer. And the time requirements are massive. literally 3 hours a
day each weekday for me with my Vosgaard PBEM. it would take time on the
weekends, but I travel out of state (and away from my computer) on
weekends to be with my wife, and she would strangle me if I did gaming
then. so, again, I agree with tripp in that this will take TONS of time.
