In the novel "War", it is explained that the human priests' magic was what
made the difference in the war against the elves. Since the elves didn't
worship or believe in the human gods, they could not protect themselves
against their magic.
I don't know what made it possible for the humans to defend themselves
against the Elven magic though. :)
Anyway, that's just what I heard (read)
