    China was an advancing and growing power as late as the c18. Only in the
    c19 facing and *industrial* Europe, was China overwhelmed.

    Actually, by the 17th century (if not earlier) China was already in
    (another) decline. But China was so far ahead of everyone at the time, that
    it took a long time for this decline to be manifested in tangible losses.
