I had a similar idea, of a character playing a type of god. The problem is it can
really upset the balance of the campaign. I went ahead and created a class I call an
"Idol". I created it a long while ago, but just might have one of my players try it out
as a ype of expirament. it isn't exactly the king of scionworship you talked about, but
it is worth looking at. It's pretty powerful, but I added a major alignment "falw" for
the class. He or she can only be Lawful good or Chaotic evil, and if they oppose their
alignment in any instance... well why don't you just go look at it and see. I have it
    posted on the WWW at:

Also because of its power, it's required expirience points are quite high. The class
can easily by modified down however.

    Tell me what you think.

Woah! It takes a lot more than just spending some RP to go from mortal
to power. I know I've had a character who's been at it for about six
years now. It requires some 500+ true worshipers, all your stats at 13+
with one 19+ and one 21+, the character must be at least 10-15th level
(depending on campaign power-level), and must involve at least two of
the following three things: a like-minded deity, an artifact, or a
    spell/quest involving great loss/cost/effort.
Just because a Birthright scion has a religious following does not mean
that the player gets to run a god. In addition to all of the above, the
character should probably have a good deal of difficulty creating temple
holdings dedicated to herself. I know mine sure did -- even after ten
years, he still only had a single temple (1).

I remember an RPGA module called `Election` where players were role
playing gods. There was, of course, no actual physical or mental treat for
them in the adventure. Their main goal was to come together for an
immortal election and choose only one candidate among them to win, despite
    of their differences.
After that I wrote a module of my own where players played amnesic gods,
discovering their powers and characters throughout an adventure on their
    home worlds.
RESULT : No wrong in role playing (not roll playing) immortals or alike.
It is possible to have fun with immortal players with a good scenario...

thank you for (sniff) your vote of confidence. I still don't think I've
heard from the person whose original post prompted my post, to which I'me
still waiting to hear a reply.
