Hail all,
For those of you who don't use the war card system for battles. What do you use to represent the different units? I've been looking for counters or miniatures to use to represent the different units in birthright. Any ideas for some cost effective ones?Cattle die and kinsmen die,

but one thing never, I ween, will die, --

For large scale combat I`ve used little 1"x1" square "chits" cut from
cardstock paper (nice and cheap) that can be written on and disposed of
after play. Generally all that gets written on them is a unit number and
arrows to indicate their facing (the system I use includes some stuff for
flanking units, so I need facing for units) while other information on the
units are kept on a separate piece of paper, but sometimes people have
wanted to put more on them. It`s a good idea to mount them on a coin or
use a little bit of adhesive on them (the gummy stuff one uses to mount
posters works) so if someone tosses a book on the table the chits don`t get
all blown off the map.

Thanks geeman, about an hour after your post I found this site with some interesting cut outs for units.

That`s a cool site. The drawings are a little cartoonish for my taste, but
each to his/er own. In the past, I`ve had problems with "stand up"
cardboard figures in that they are prone to falling over easily when people
slam books closed or something. When I`ve used lead figures that`s worked
out OK, but I`m not really into painting them, and I lost interest in
portraying RPG combat using figures. (For more "pure" wargames, however,
they still seem appropriate for some reason.)

If you are going for wargaming then why stop half-way? GO all the way to a
real and workable (and tested!) system: De Bellis Multitudinis (DBM).
I use this and have been working on grading systems for Anuirean, Brecht,
and Khinasi (Plains, Peninsular, and Island) militaries.
The only thing it doesn`t handle is magic (and in my games there has not
been a lot of magic on the battle field -anyway-), but some people tinker
away on a fantasy version. In the rare instances in my games that a wizard
shows up in a battle, I tend to treat them like a general with an
artillery combat factor. I have been working on some other ideas, but they
are only errant thoughts at the moment.

Another thought:
There is a simpler version of DBM called De Bellis Antiquitas (DBA) (which
can be sampled as an online game here: http://www.dbaol.com/).
There is also a vaguely farcial version of DBA for fantasy games called
The Hordes of the Things (HOTT).

DBA might be fine if you want to do it quick,BUT if you want to do it right do it Armati rules with 15mm units. www.og15s.com This is what im planning for my game and i think doing a battle in the course of a night adds excitement to the game.

I like DBM over Armati. It seems that, at least in this part of the world,
I am not alone and there is no real alternative to DBx.
