    We talked about that some time ago. I'm a scandinavian, so I think that the
    Rjurik names are VERY funny (sometimes). I can mention that my city is in the
    White Witch realm (Pitea, and my father comes from Boden : ).
    I thought that we could put together a list over all the funny names they use
    (just for fun).

    Yeah, the Vejle province in the White Witch realm is a city in Denmark.
    So is Viborg/Rjuvik. And 'Odemark' means 'Wasteland' in english! :)

    Sorry that this will sound like a handwaving excuse, but, the simple fact
    is, Aebrynnis isn't Earth and, because of that, some things work
    differently there. We checked out our fiction-related climateology (sp?)
    with people who know what they're talking about and they said things could
    work the way we postulate. Then again, they might not--it's a different
    world. What it came down to was, we wanted a glacier, we came up with
    reasons why it COULD be a glacier, and we went with it.

    Again, Brechtur isn't Germany and neither high nor low Brecht is German. I
    have to confess, though, my editor on that project did tend to stray a
    little too close (for my taste) toward real world German. I guess she felt
    that was more "realistic" than my made-up Germanic names.
    As far as the German-English mishmash, I can explain that as a
    deliberate move. That mishmash reflects the fact that Brechtur was not only
    conquered (or, at least, occupied by) Anuire (which uses many
    English-sounding names as well as French derivates), but was set up as
    something of a cultural mishmash on its own. "Everyone comes to Brechtur";
    a higher percentage of the Great Bay's population is non-native in ancestry
    than any other area on the world. That leads to strange, often
    unpronounceable names, sort of like America. Bastardizations of words and
    dialects led to the creation of low Brecht as a language, and the naming
    system comes from that.
