Thread: Blood Mark = Blood Trait?

What do you guys think about the interpretation that the Blood Mark ability
represents the early stage of a character transforming into an ershegh? I
ask because I`ve always thought that ability was a little mild, and now
that I`m fiddling around with a new system of defining and developing blood
abilities it occurred to me that such a transformation could simply be
"rolled into" a description of the Blood Trait ability.
By way of support for the idea, there aren`t a lot of ersheghlien running
around. Certainly not many in comparison to the number of
awnsheghlien. Even if the corrupting nature of Azrai`s bloodline leads
itself more easily to the concept of transformative effects, the ratio of
bloodlines (6:1) and number of scions of other derivations around would
seem to manifest more ersheghlien than there are. Blood Mark as the early
stages of transformation would certainly even out those numbers a
bit. Further, because ersheghlien transformation is voluntary rather than
the forced change of awnsheghlien those characters who have the ability now
could remain at their current level of transformation, requiring no change
in the actual characters themselves.
It would, however, represent a pretty dramatic shift in the potential
changes of those characters. I would also hate to speculate what the
dragon birthmark of Prince Avan indicates he will eventually transform into
(if he chose) or the horror of Bouruine`s red hair and beard eventually
turning him into some giant, auburn tribble.... ;)

I think this by itself is enough to explain the discrepancy in numbers,
especially when combined with the general Cerilian attitude of "What? The
regent just turned into a strange nonhuman magical beastie? He must be an
evil awnshegh -- kill him immediately!"

Why is this image alone not enough to dissuade you forever? =)

a toss-off and expands it in a way that really connects with the setting.
Cool. I am really looking forward to your expanded-progression blood
abilities; I think the system is going to work nicely. Auburn tribbles
regardless.

I see blood mark as the first step towards Divine Aura.

True. It does kind of lead one to wonder about the nature of the blood
ability. That is, do ersheghlien know what their transformation will bring
and, therefore, choose whether or not to go that way or is it something
they have no idea about, but choose because it is part of their nature.
Blood marks as the opening stages of a transformation into ersheghlien
form, however, would still go a long way to explaining why not a lot of
scions choose to take advantage of that ability. That is, because they
have no desire to actually shift away dramatically from their human form.

I have to admit I`m horrified... yet strangely fascinated by the possibility.

That`s a possibility. They have similar effects. Though the description
of Divine Aura mentions Bloodmark specifically, I kind of get the
impression they are different functions. Divine Aura being more intangible
and Blood Mark being more transformative. I haven`t tangled with either
description yet, so we`ll have to see what happens when it gets right down
to it.

I have actually played with Bloodmark as the Minor version of Divine Aura.
It works. But so could other variants.
Like others here, I tried to put all blood powers into the spectrum of
minor/major/great, and this seemed to be thenatural combination.

I should be able to get a rough draft finished in a week or so. I tend to
over-estimate my productivity a bit, however, so it could take longer than
that. I`ve about a dozen blood abilities yet to write up, but they seem to
mostly be the longer ones.

I see Blood Mark as being closer to Blood History and to a lesser degree
Divine Aura than I do Blood Trait or anything transformative.
