I must do a plug for this game - it is very much in the spirit of
birthright. There is tactical combat in real-time and a strategic level with
    one-year turns.

They have done their research well, too. The units and technologies of the
game are reasonable. I believe many on this list could improve their grasp
of medieval warfare by playing this game!

The warfare part is fairly good (though castle assaults are somewhat
lacking). I wouldn`t say the strategy part is so great though, being
somewhat simplistic. Also, the assassin unit is completely out of place
    in a medieval game.

Personally, I`m betting the upcoming Crusader Kings will be a much
    better game, strategically speaking.

You think the Assassin is out of place?????? Trust me, assassins have been
a valuable part of European Warfare since the time of Caesar!

What would you recommend to make the Strategy better?

When you get multiple bishops and emissaries assassinated every turn,
that`s not historically accurate. How many political leaders can you
actually name as having fallen to assassination?

More developed and varied (and realistic) diplomacy. Improving your
nation for purposes other than being able to build bigger and better
    units.

Make no mistake, Medieval: Total War is primarily a battle simulation,
with a strategic part tacked on but by no means essential. Your main
goal is to conquer everyone else.

GAME.....the thing you do to pass the time.

If you want a reality simulator you`ll have to wait a couple decades for the
technology to become available to lose yourself in it. :-)

A realistic game doesn`t equal a reality simulator. And MTW is not a very realistic game about the Medieval period.

Well, I`m playing Italy, and I have a problem. When trading, you need to
have a naval line connecting your ports to neutral ports or ports belonging
to the enemy. Now, my armies have been so successful that I`m running out of
non-Italian ports to trade with. Thus, my income actually improves when I
give away a port province to another player or when it becomes neutral.

So conquest is not always the way to go, even in MTW. There are also
historical goals you can try for, that do not involve conquering the world.
"Total" seems to mean war by any means - economic, assassination,
inquisition, diplomacy, trade, army, navy - not just the basic stand-up
fight. Plundering your opponent`s provinces can be an important way of
achieving an objective - that is, to keep them down.

Still, I admit that you are right in the main; MTW is about war. What
impressed me was the level of research put into the various units and lines
of development - the actual game technique used to represent these
    improvements is not too impressive.

I can`t compare this game to Shogun TW however, as I`ve never played that
title. Reviewers on gamefaqs.com say Medieval TW is a lot more complex and
less of a war game and more of a simulation.

    /Carl

Bah. Medieveal Total War managed to take massed combat with thousands of men, assaulting castles, morale and 3d-swoopy-spinny-ness and somehow make it really, really dull.

Play Stronghold instead, not as "realistic" but is fun, will run on pretty much anything and you can get it for < 10 quid if you look hard enough...
