Out of all the D&D and AD&D campaign settings Birthright seems to be one most directly based on historical analogues; for example, we are actually invited in the text to read the Khinasi as Spanish Moors or the Anuireans as western Europeans. About the only other setting I can think of which comes close to encouraging this level of comparison is Mystara: while decidedly a fantasy world the individual nations are often accompanied by suggestions like "Think of Thyatis as medieval Byzantium from our own world."

We're all aware of how few published BR resources there are out there. I'm curious, in light of how "historical" the setting appears to be, has anyone had particular success adapting one type of AD&D material to BR more than another? Ravenloft seems awfully European to me with its franco-germanic place names. Likewise, Al-Qadim seems like it would be particularly useful in running a Khinasi campaign.

    Any opinions or success/failure stories?

Try this page, the PBEM is dead but maybe you can contact Solmyr, I know one of his pages has the Mystar Birthright PBEM and a Savage Coast (Mystara) PBEM, he might have some good ideas on your questions. He is currently running another PBEM in Anuire, right now, but at least he can give you some pointers if you are interested in starting your own PBEM.;)

I have used many Ravenloft scenarios with good effect; the power of darkness
in Ravenloft is quite similar to the influence of the sahdow world.

Actually, I have used loads of scenarios from other settings, buth Ravenloft
scenarios are the most unusual ones I have adopted.

It's funny but I'd never really thought about the similarity between Ravenloft and BR's Shadow World. I've just finished reading BR adventure "Seeking Bloodsilver" from Dungeon Magazine (which takes place almost entirely in the SW: it taught me a lot about how it works) and the murky, oppressive atmosphere really is reminiscent of Ravenloft's mists and tortured domains.

You know, now that I think of it, Anuire really could use some sly, travelling gypsies with a special relation to the Shadow World: maybe I'll pick up something on the Vistani (I think Greyhawk has a gypsy equivalent called the Rhenee, but there's not much on them.)

Well, Cerilia hs halflings - nomadic (in 3E) tricksters with an affinity for
the shadow world. Isn`t that enough?

I use Al-Qadim stuff in my Khinasi campaign with some minor changes. Al-Qadim is high-fantasy with a lot of magic, also there are no camels or elephants in kinashi.

Ravenloft can not really compared to the shadow world, because Ravenloft is a renaissance-setting.
my purpose is now to lead you into the Pallace where you shall have a clear and delightful view of all those various objects, and scattered excellencies, that lye up and down upon the face of creation, which are only seen by those that go down into the Seas, and by no other....

Try Dark of the Moon, by Richard Baker, as a shadow world encounter. Especially if the PC's are traveling in Vosgaard. Although changing the humans to haflings I think is a must if you want it to fit right.

And the Shadow World is? I mean, Anuire, Brechtur and Khinasi are on the
level of renaissance, but Rjurik and Vosgaard are more like dark age.
Shadow World, however...I don`t think you`ll find many sentient
    inhabitants there...

Not so pessimistic - there are lot of sentient inhabitants there, just
not very much living inhabitants... ;-)
(Wraiths, Shadows, and all other stuff from Bloodspawn like Cwn Awnnn,
dispossesed, naughty fairys, a lot of halflings that has not fled the
shadow world, the minions of the lost, liches, spectres...)

I wasn`t suggesting that we put the Ravenloft adventures in the Shadow
World. That is possible, even interesting, but not a must.

The shadow world is close to Cerilia - and shadow world influences can be
felt most everywhere. And the shadow world seems to favor evil and give
power to evil people. In that way, it is similar to Ravenloft. And certain
powers granted by the world of shadows can have an effect in the world of
    day.

Shadow World adventures can alos be nice. Basically, you can stage anything
there. Some real-world places and events can have reflections in the Shadow
World, and that includes places and events in the past. That way, it is
possible to use the SW as a stage to stage reenactments of historical
events. There was an adventure in Dungeon Magazine (Seekinb Bloodsilver)
    that used this idea.

    /Carl
