Will BR3E make BR2E obsolete?

While obviously the BR3E will contain changes, it sounds like it is more of a conversion supplement than a replacement for 2E. If I have the BR2E edition, will the 3E edition make everything in 2E obsolete? Even the cards & stuff? Or will 2E and 3E work together to form a complete BR campaign setting?

We're striving for compatibility of materials; however, the rules are being brought hopefully entirely in line with 3e rules - this means that a lot of the 2e rules will be "obsolete," but no more than is the case for 2e vs 3e in general. I.e. BR3E is written with the intention to make BR entirely 3e compatible. The setting is, of course, the same, excepting many of the rules changes between editions - the flavor and feel of the world is entirely the same, however. In the case of the war cards, I'm not quite sure yet, as that section hasn't been worked through yet - it is what we're currently working on; however, I do not see any reason why the war cards should be affected by the conversion; they are likely to be used in a largely similar fashion.

Do you mean that BR3E is a re-working from the ground up and that you don't need the BR2E set? That being the case, I assume the 3E version will also have history, politics, maps, cards...etc.?

Yes...

The BRCS is designed so that someone who has no knowledge of BR can sit down, read it through, and know how to run a BR campaign, or play in one. Apart from providing a standard version of the 3E birthright rules for those already interested in BR, we hope to attract new players and DMs to the setting.

Hello!
I thought under the OGL was only allowed to create a D20 Birthright,
when you only converted, but any player
would still need the original product? Or was it that the player only
needs the PHB, and not the Birthright book?

Yes, ConjurerDragon, the OGL does only allow for the conversion of the origional materials in a manner that requires a user to have the origional materials or the creation of new material as long as it follows a standard format and refers to rules in the core books. There is also some agreement between Hasbro/WotC and the holders of the official fansites of discontinued worlds/product lines. I do not have specific knowledge of the legal terms used in that agreement. That issue must be referred to Arjan.

Because of the proposed scope of the BRCS, one is led to believe that Arjan and the Team have more rights than given in the OGL. One would assume that these individuals have already looked into what the limits were of what they could do from the beginning. There is also the issue of the actully copyright of BR and whether that could be obtainned from Hasbro/WotC as Sovereign Press has with Dragonlance.

As I am fairly new (again) to the website, I have not gone back through all the posts to see whether these issues have been addressed by Arjan and/or the Team in the past. If they were, then perhaps an update could be posted here?

Arjan is handling the logistics with WotC. It is correct that the OGL
does not allow someone to republish TSR/WotC material in toto. As the
official WotC fan group for Birthright, however, WotC has granted
Birthright.net permission to use copyrighted Birthright material for
fan products. We are also granted the right to make such work
"official" should we (as a group) chose to do so. The folks at WotC
are very supportative of the project`s goals and no objections over
copyright issues have been raised.

The questions regarding the reuse of art-work has not yet been fully
answered. Tony is _very_ supportive (to the point of volunteering to
donate some of his unpublished Birthright artwork and offering to do a
new cover at super-bargin rates). We have every hope that with
WotC and Tony`s blessing we will also be able to include some of the
artwork from previous works. I certainly hope that we`ll be able
to reuse from of Tony`s excellent art - it seems to me that the BR art
is vital in setting the campaign`s tone.

Ah yes, the War Cards. Such a cute little addendum. However, 3E will not make them obsolete. They were obsolete before Birthright was released.
