What do you like best in the birthright campaign ?

What do you like best in this setting ?

I liked the addition of the regency game, the high-powered realm spells, but
as a DM I grew to appreciate that it was cut off from the other D&D worlds,
and that it had a discrete list of monsters in the world.

In the past during 1st Ed gamming i played with groups who liked to build kingdoms and run them, but it was kinda touch and go, no idea much things cost, or length of time and armies at you command how to run them. Birthright brought everything together, running kindoms, ruling lands, even ship to ship combat, and if your players get tired of polotics and the day to day operations of the kindom, then an old fasion hack n slash in the Vos lands works well to

The political level of play and the "low level" access to that political level.

Hi there,

I like Birthright because of its uniqueness. You can play regents and be 1st level (in FR you can't play this, if you're 15th), you habe unique monsters (the awnsheglien for example) and of cause you have the bloodline! To be fearless, to have a protection from evil or to have regeneration makes a character and the world, where he lives unique. These are the things, which I prefer.

I don`t mind being referred to as "geeman" [been called much worse from
time to time.... ;)] I just prefer my given name. Usually a first name
alone has been taken by most email services, and I don`t find Gary228 or
some such thing very soothing. "I am Gary228. You will be assimilated...
resistance is futile...." Anyway, "geeman" is a very old handle that I
picked up for various reasons way back in the days CB radios went through
their brief period of vogue in the U.S. and turned into a user name for
BBS`s when they were popular, chat rooms during a brief flirtation with AOL
when that came out, etc. Oh, man.... Now I feel old.

What I like about BR is the system of rules that introduce a whole new
level of play; holding levels, realm spells, etc. and a description (though
general) for what those holding levels meant. Before that realm system
came out not only was there very little means of articulating what a
kingdom represented, but being a ruler in D&D was handled like some sort of
ego trip on the part of the player/PC. One literally needed to go
adventuring in order to support the vice of owning a castle and leading
people. It may or may not be good to be the king, but it was certainly
expensive to be the king. Sure, the civilians that lived under a PCs aegis
paid a few sp/month in taxes, but that was pretty paltry given the expenses
of even a modest castle`s upkeep, and there was no system for determining
how many such people arrived, why they would start paying taxes to the PC, etc.

Worst of all, for a very long time being a ruler and earning even the few
sp/month from "commoners" was contingent upon reaching "name level" in a
character class, which never really made a lot of sense. Every ruler had
to be, by implication, a 9th or higher level character no matter what the
circumstances of their gaining their titles, throne, etc. so there were
things like the Greyhawk setting that listed characters whose levels and
powers had very little to do with their positions.

And you didn`t even mention crystal radio sets, decoder rings, your account
at Western Union back when telegrams were the high tech way to communicate,
or your identity among the Freemasons, when that was the primier chat
community.

Of course, you may not actually be that old ...

That is why I think the creation of regency points is essential. It is why 1st level regents can rule.

The realm-level of play is what originally drew me to the Birthright setting. The concept of realms, holdings, domain actions, realm magic, regency, etc... was very interesting, and still is. Then I took on liking the unique elements of the setting: generally low in magic yet the available magic is pretty powerful, the bloodlines, the awnsheghliens, the specialty priests(when I got to the part about the clergy, I really loved how they handled the gods and their priests), the human subcultures and the other racial uniqueness, etc... I'd say the whole setting has become a passion to me.
