Birthright Gorgon's Alliance lockups

I've taken up BGA again after several years, but I'm experiencing lockups at seemingly random moments. Sometimes within one minute after starting a game, sometimes after 5, other times after an hour or so. The only thing left is a cold reboot of my pc (Ctr-Alt-Del doesn't work either). I've run with patch 1.03 and also the beta 1.04, but the problem remains This is the only game this happens with.
For older games I'm running win98se in a separate boot partition without any conflicts on drivers or so.
Anyone any ideas?

I run it with Windows 95 C without major problems.
You run it alone, no programs running in the background?
No virusscan or anything? If not then close all other programs.

Do you run it in FULL WINDOW?
