I have been tossing with some ideas for a new design for the website.
attached is a preview.

its still a quickly drawn layout, but you get the idea.

i'd like to hear what you think about it.

Is that just going to be a new CSS skin which will be the default then?

Looks gorgeous. Would there be a "latest threads" section for the
message boards on that page like the current portal?

Love it :)

One question: what's the "Portals" thing? (or just a placeholder?)

Currently we have 2 portal pages (besides the landing page) that are linked on the homepage

BR Campaign Setting (http://www.birthright.net/brwiki/index.php/BRCS:Main_Page)
D20 System Reference (http://www.birthright.net/brwiki/index.php/D20:System_Reference_Document)

I have been intending to add more, like for example an atlas portal.
I did already made the setup for portal systems.. but we dont have many wiki editors.. so as with many other similar projects.. its moved to the TODO list
( http://www.birthright.net/brwiki/index.php/Portal:Atlas ) (yep it still needs to be wikified and made suitable for BR)

the idea behind the portal button/tab is to list portals, or landing pages to certain areas of the website in order to find information easier...
for example, the atlas i mentioned.. but one can also make a domain specific portal, or an adventure portal, awshegs.. or even campaign specific like pbems.. sky is the limit

So I imagine that you aren't planning for the wiki spotlight to include all of a wiki page. It'll be interesting how the info boxes for domains etc fit in.

Where would you place the Wiki Changes?

Nice though the artwork is, I think it dominates the page too much. I wouldn't complain if it was shrunk or covered.

indeed, those would be snippets of wikipges, or anything else we'd like to share and put there.
something like the tip of the day thingy we got on the wikihomepage (http://www.birthright.net/brwiki/index.php/Help:Editing/Tipoftheday)
or adding a carousel using
brwiki/spotlight/1
brwiki/spotlight/2
brwiki/spotlight/3 etc
(see Template:Random Subpage (http://www.birthright.net/brwiki/index.php/Template:Random_subpage) - the portals use this same template)

on the side, like they are now.. i didnt have much space in the PS file, but those white thingies are supposed to be those blocks.

well the new design does make certain blocks obsolete and thus the pages will become smaller in size.. actually it will be smaller then it is now.. (i think :) )

I got a semi working mock up of the site viewable at: http://www.dndworlds.net/

I cant touch the front page blocks since they are inherited from the current site.

most important is the search (right top) this is already working and searches the WHOLE site (forums AND wiki)

i intent to remove the large image when going to the forum and wiki, but i will have to play with the templates.

Don't forget to do something about the account-specific menu bar
(Edit Avatar--> Edit Your Details Edit Options Miscellaneous Private Messages Subscribed Threads Your Profile Who's Online
Your Notifications
Go to Page...) etc. For me this appears as a hodgepodge of unformatted text above the recent threads box.

I like the map as the background.

What is the pale thing behind the major headings (Home Forum Wiki Portals Downloads)? Is it shadowing gone wrong?
