Is the Noble class really necessary? I think Aristocrat can reflect your typical noble, and Fighter, Paladin or Cleric your more adventurous nobles.

I think for 3.x Noble is the only essential class. Its the adventuring classes that are optional.

The BRCS noble reflects the only class designed for province rulership. Several factors were added to make it more "playable' than the aristocrat (which as an NPC class is specifically weaker than PC classes).

One might find a variety of more useful noble classes elsewhere. Many settings now include such a class, some more appropriate than others.
I would certainly not describe the BRCS noble as essential to the setting. It is a class devoid of benefits a regent doesn't already possess in greater abundance.
I can see why Arentak, or anyone else would wonder why bother with it.

Now you're confusing me, Kenneth. You seem to having an argument with yourself.

A noble class designed for ruling domains through the right skills and abilities is the only essential class. Noble classes designed as wealthy fighters required to take regional feats, or from settings that don't match BR (say the Star Wars Noble) are not the noble class that I am referring to.
If a noble class is designed to do the business of ruling, every character who rules needs at least a taste of it.
If a noble class is designed for something else (too knightly, or do much just a diplomat) it may or may not be useful, but its hardly essential.

That makes more sense. Thanks!

A noble class is certainly necessary, unless of course you decide to split adventuring and domain play and effectively run a dual/gestalt class system. I quite like the brcs noble - but then I only saw other noble classes much later - and they were written years after the brcs noble so frankly should be better...

I think it's absolutely necessary that there is a separation between the "ruling" classes and the "adventuring" classes.
A noble has combat aptitude but still spends a lot of time behind a desk or in the palace. He is not a rough-and-tumble, ass-in-the-dirt fighter.
For those military types out there, consider the Nobles your Officer corps. vs. a Fighter, your enlisted corps.
