I'm going to be sending my PC's into the shadow world to retrieve a
lost magical item. I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas of
what to throw their way in terms of creatures. The characters are of middle
levels so I need to find somethings more impressive than normal skeletons
and zombies.

When I read Greatheart ( Birthright Novel ) undead orogs and undead
humans came form the portal. They were lead by a lichlord. In the book the
shadow world has many kingdoms of undead from the Battle At Mt Deismeer.
When they died they went to the shadow world and saw it uninhabited exeptfor
Halflings. So they lead lesser undead and made armies, castles and
provinces.

Why not add some adventure hooks and plots or creatures from
Ravenloft in? I think it would fit perfectly well. Or make the place
they go to something like the mayor battlefield in FR (battle of the
Bones, if I'm correct). It was a former battlefield with no
vegetation anymore, just grinded and broken bones and rusted weaponry
all around nowadays. As you move in from the edge toward the center,
things start to get tougher. It starts with zombies and skeletons,
but soon those increase in numbers, hit dice, weaponry and others
join the carnaval, like wights, spectres, an occasional shadow etc. It
it rumored that in the center lives a powerful lich lord who controls
the mob and has several lieutenants. Maybe you could even throw a
speciality priest of Mellifleur in, always nice chaps for a healthy
conversation.
Good luck!
Seb

magic wand or Alladins Lamp, all you need is your own imagination...

Lets say the players go into the Shadow World in Anuire. Imagine them
encountering evil twins of present regents. For example the Vampire Mage
Caelidhe Doisiere. Or the Death Knight Prince Darien Avan.

While I can't get too specific about our plans for the SW at this time, I can
say using undead is certainly a good place to start. But consider the SW more
than just a repository for Cerilia/Aebrynis's restless spirits. The Shadow
World is a strange and unusual place, where things aren't always as they
seem. Time and distance can be distorted, illusions and phantasms take on
real forms, and quite "un-Cerilian" creatures exist there. The Shadow World,
as we intend it at this time, will be a strange place where heroes of all
experience levels will be kept guessing.

In other words...surrealistic?
