I've been running a BR campaign PBEM for about three weeks now. It is set
on a very small "contintentlet" which was being colonized by humans and a
scattering of elves and dwarves from a mainland area. The area has now been
cut off from the mainland (long story), one of the colonies has attacked and
assimilated the others, and the game has begun. Obviously, the area is not
a part of Cerlia's map, and in fact I have not mentioned any of the specific
BR human races and avoided using Bloodlines and Blood abilities.
I have been having fun with this, but also wondering about using the BR
rules in another campaign of mine where a PC of noble blood (a bastard
child) has finally become an Earl on attaining 11th level and building a
tower in a mostly-uninhabited part of the land. This player is an Evoker,
so right away I can see some differences -- no realm spells outside of
Cerilia! This may explain why there are so few mage regents IMC, however...
Any advice for someone trying to use the BR taxation and "event turn" rules
in a homebrewed campaign world without Ley Lines, Realm Spells, etc? I
think it could work pretty well, although fighters and thieves would be at
distinct advantages over Priests and Mages when it came to ruling lands
(Actually priests wouldn't be all that bad off). Maybe give priests FULL
regency for Law Holdings, etc.?
What about Bloodlines? In most campaigns almost anyone can become a
"regent" if they put their minds to it. I am thinking that PCs such as my
Earl PC should start with the lowest Bloodline score available, maybe
slightly more ("tainted") for a bastard son of a Baron, etc. Obviously
there are no Blood Abilities, but these are not completely needed in most
campaigns.
Overall, I have been very impressed with the campaign setting, and this is
after spending a great deal of time designing a tax system for my Earl PCs
holdings! Someday I may design my own world with the BR rules in mind,
implementing the gods, blood abilities, etc. but making my own maps and
kingdoms.
