Hello everyone. Below is an email my friend sent David Wise about the
letters some of us sent to Gencon with mmodena, and the reply he receieved.

Friend:
Firstly, let me thank you for reply to all us BR fans and letting us know
you read them. It means a lot to me and my friends to know that you are
actually paying attention. By your writing below, it seems as though BR WILL
be coming back. Is this so, or is it only a 'Maybe'?

DW:
I can't promise you anything at this time, and I certainly don't have a
timetable for you. I simply want you to know that bringing back BR is a high
priority for me. That's as close to saying "yes" as I can get. :-)

DW

So perhaps Wotc are waiting for the release of D&D 3rd ed before
re-releasing Birthright. I certainly hope so!

Ash

That's pretty likely, Dark Sun, the other world that has fans crying for
rerelease, has been given pretty much the same slate, they want to bring
it back (it was only cancelled because of the Time of Troubles at TSR
anyway), but will wait until after 3E is released.

According to the WotC/TSR website, 3rd Edition is sheduled for August
release, 2000. A friend said he had a rough copy, from an acquiantance who
works for TSR in the UK, and it included a Sorcerer, Monk and Assassin class
beyond the standard classes. The photocopy he critiqued for his friend was
pretty much all combat abilities, not much mentioning roleplaying, but was
definitely a rough copy.

Snow.

I playtested 3E, and personally, I think the new rules go VERY FAR to
enrich roleplaying over power-gaming, especially during combat encounters.
The new rules bring combat alive and make it much more interesting than
just, "I rolled a natural 20." Now, all those Errol Flynn moves we see in
movies and read in the TSR books are brought to combat in a very simple
way. And spellcaster-lovers, you're going to LOVE what they've done to
magic. Various forms of metamagic are now analogous to proficiencies (like
who would ever memorize "far reaching"?) and while the spells are virtually
identical, a lot of them have been assigned new spell levels (monster
summoning I is now a first-level spell, for example).

Best of all is the sorceror class (especially if they fixed the one glitch
that I vigorously complained about). Sorcerors are granted spells based on
charisma, not intelligence, because they're "natural" spellcasters who
never need to memorize (but they have a small selection of spells to choose
from). The rules didn't say how they get them, but based on the link to
charisma, I think they have a supernatural force at their backs, kind of
like the witch kit. So a very charismatic baby gets a visit from a solar or
a demon or a djinn or whatever, who grants spell ability for some unknown
reason.

Assassins get spells based on intelligence, and must be memorized, but bard
spells are now linked to charisma as well (and I don't think they have to
memorize either). Assassins, bards, and mages/sorcerors all have their own
spell lists, so you won't be seeing assassins, for example, casting
inappropriate spells (instead they get spells like ice knife, silence, and
invisibility).

I'm a HUGE fan of the new rules and I can't wait until they come out.
