Depends what exactly is the problem with the spell you've been having.
Are you using 1st or 2nd ed rules? Are you requireing the mage to use
spell components (IMC its 100 gp per casting)...try monsters with multiple
attacks..even when they miss, the PC loses stoneskins, etc..

First of all it costs 1,000gp to cast each time in diamond dust
components.
Secondly, it is reduced for each magical attack, so a Magic Missile does
full damage *and* reduces the Stoneskin for 1 by each missile fired. It
is also reduced by Fireball, etc.
Thirdly, it is reduced by each attack, not *hit*, inflicted by an enemy,
so something with 3 attacks a round will reduce the Stoneskin by three
each round until the Stoneskin is gone (no needs to roll To Hit, unless
you use fumbles). If your party is of high-enough levels to cast
Stoneskin, attacks by low Hit Dice creatures with 3 or 4 attacks are not
inappropriate.
Hope this helps.
Yours,
Stephen.

Also, (at least IMC) you can only have one instance of this spell cast upon
yourself at any given time. It works just like Armor. No matter how many
times you cast it on yourself, only the first one counts. The rest are just
wasted. This keeps you from having the wizard cast it on himself and his
friends everyday until their money runs out.
This way they really aren't protected for that long.

also I use a House rule in my group...
it only affects the caster...why would a mage want to have stoneskinned fighters
all around?....

Reduce the duration, I think it was mentioned somewhere in Sage advice
of the Dragon Magazine. To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com

There is a "tiny" little magical add-on to magical weapons that is called
Anti-Stoneskin (I think) and is mentioned in the Magic Encyclopedia. The
basics of that add-on is that the weapon ignors any Stoneskin spell and
inflicts damage as usual.

I must say one thing. If the PCs use stoneskin a lot, then have the NPCs as
well. If your players don't get that you don't like the use of the spell,
then just keep on using it... or a nice dispel magic or a improved dispel
magic cast by the oppsoing wizard (that the players get when they defeat the
wiz... always reward them with your spells, and they will never complain when
you make some to counter their stuff... because then they get it!) that
counters just armor/protection spells and such. When they use something like
that, all word has to do is get out and anyone going after them will find
some way to counter it. Also, if they can take blows... it might get out
that they are imortal or maybe even into some "evil" magic... which could
bring a party of adventurers down on them. Always try and counter it in
games if you have already made the mistake of allowing it.To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com
