do wish to continue to recieve the information on it, please do not just go
and delete people who do not frequently post messages.

Ife we do have an admin it should be mostly a purely technical job, cleaning
up dead e-mails and maintaining a FAQ. It should also be handled with a
modicrum of control. Deleteing only those whose e-mails bounce more than
once, consecutively.
Since server problems can bound messages now and then.

I hate to disagree with the all powerful Darth Cooper but just because
some people don't post to the list don't pull out your saber and start
trimming the tree. Sure there are a few, Darkstar, Mark
VanderMuelern(sorry Mark I killed your name), Andrew, Morg the Master,
and a few others that primarily do all the posts, but you guys are
daunting to say the least. I posted a few things to the list and get no
responses on my works so I don't post anymore, that doesn't mean I am
not listening.

OK, I'm going to answer this comment as if I know what is going on (and
if I'm wrong, then *I'm* worried too). What I think the evil Admin-to-be
is saying is that he intends to be harsher on the non-contributers than
ones who flood this list with relevant material. (Am I right here?).
That makes sense, it's probably a good idea to give a little leeway to
contributers, and not be nice to people whose only contributions are
spam. As to disintegrating people on the first offense...well, I'm just
hoping you're kidding. Other than that, you have my vote to take on this
onerous task. (I mean it's not like anyone else *wants* it).

well, i'm for you as admin. i don't want the job :) unless there is no
other poor fool to slap it on (present nominee excluded, of course).

but i say you shouldn't de-subscribe people who are lurking. just
because the don't reply or post doesn't mean we should stamp them out
from listening in. just my point. let them stay. hopefully we'll find
some way to get them to contribute more.

This is correct. (Although, I'm glad I've got everyone a little worried
though - I see that I've actually managed to get infrequent posters to
post. Maybe this 'threat of force' thing I read in: "How to be a
Dictator in 12 easy steps" really does work! Woohoo! :D)

contributes well to this list will be given just praise, if I have to do

people get discouraged because of this! Most probably, people don't
reply because there isn't much else to say (or, its useless material -
which won't be happening anymore). That's what I mean about lurking -
don't stay silent because you think no one appreciates your hard work.
At the very least _I_ will appreciate the time you spend posting stuff
to this list.

And the reverse applies too. Anybody who insults people will get no
mercy.

Anyway, I'll be able to tell you all more, once I figure out how to
actually *run* a mailing list ...

I feel like I'm the only one here with any sense of trying to mediate.
OK, Darren, I think you're going to be voted in come hell or high water
(how many of those 9 votes were you, anyway?), but I think that the
people here who are worried about your hunger for power and corruption
thereby deserve at least a set of rules. Whether you just update the FAQ
to include your tyranny or you post a set of strictures that you're
going to follow (exactly what qualifies for Zappage (Zzortage?), what's
an insult and what's 'constructive criticism', I think you know what I
mean) in your new empire of Birthright. At the very least, warn people
of their errant ways before destroying them, almost everyone deserves a
second chance, most people aren't *trying* to break the rules here.
Hell, I haven't gotten a word of reply from my last dozen or so posts,
and that *should* send me plummeting down into lurker status and then to
die ignobly. Either way, let's here your side again before the angry mob
arises to spit you and burn you at the stake.

Well, since I just subscribed to this list like only 6 or 7 days ago to be
zooted would be most ignoble.
So, in the interest of posting something actually relevant to BR, get
rid of those lame gods. The three-month turns are cool, well, cool for
those who like to know every detail of thier domain (like me), but the gods
are so flat and generic they make me shudder. I like the evil god, if only
as to break up the vanilla. The human races are cool. I have had a lot of
people who liked that particular aspect of BR, the diversity allows them to
play something akin to what thier ancestors were.

See now, this here is a reasonable sounding reply with a good use of an
incentive to get people to become active and post. It seems to imply that
Jim has some sense in his noggin and he's using it to improve the list and
get people to post.

See now this on the other hand seems to imply that Jim is going to be
inconsistent and come down hard on people one day, and easy the next;
depending on wether or not his girlfriend dumped him or pleasured him (or
any other inconsistency of life). I cannot accept this.

Well, I've run a list before. Not a mailing list though. It was a forum that
had over 200 participants and 50 threads of continual discussion that
brought about (literally) hundreds of posts each day. Some of the
participants were great, others were chatty gossipers. I and one partner
kept them in line, kept the discussions going, and even organised external
events where we could all meet and have a good time.

I've got the skills for this job; but you are right: I don't want it. I've
got a 10-12 hour a day job, a wife, a kid, and in addition to my daily
development of my game, I am studying for my MCSE. All of which makes me too
busy to really want to do more than lurk and post. Don't hold a pity party
though.

If your administration of this list is going to turn it into a development
of your whimsy you can plink me off the list now. I will just start my own
list on List Bot. :)

I belive that was a financial decision.

That being said: You can still have my vote. I can't believe you are being
serious about flaking out over administrating a mailing list. I'm still
keeping my fingers crossed that you are trolling. Bear in mind that if you
are you are creating a lot of OT responses. The exact opposite of what you
should want as admin.


Best of luck with our precious little list. Please don't kill it by being
heavy handed. It's ran quite well on autopilot for some time now..

I was not going to post originally, as I believe that was at least
partially your intent. After seeing some further posts, and your responses
to them, I have changed my mind.

This is particularly disturbing to me. What seems to be coming across
here is the this-is-how-I-want-it-to-be attitude on what should be a we
concept, i.e. people rather than an individual. I applaud your desire and
enthusiasm, and I cannot fault some of your beliefs. Your methodology seems
limiting, arbitrary, and capricious. This is not fair to a list that should
have a common goal determined by the group, not by one individual. If this
was the way it was beforehand, there would be no problem. What is apparently
occurring here a rapid, very substantial change. Your ideas of what
birthright should be like on this list is known at a time when there is
little time for discussion.

This is not a fair, nor even accurate, thing to say. There were many
factors for this, and most of them are not applicable to the listmembers.
I do appreciate this list so far, and I am quite impressed with the
various members, including their like for the setting, their various ideas,
and their committments to furthering such.
I am troubled, though, that there is a possible individual agenda,
however laudable, that precludes specific things about this list that have
been "allowed" before. I am certainly bothered by the concept that one's
membership on this br list may be wholly dependent upon one person's
judgement on one's "quality" content postings and that one must post
consistently to remain a member. Especially if one has to depend on the mood
of the person deciding this.
I am not sure of how serious you are on this matter, and whether or not
some of your words are coming across clearly enough. I respect your beliefs,
and some of them I fully agree with. It is that some of the methods that you
apparently will use to further those beliefs I disagree with, and consider
unfair. If you happen to achieve the position you desire and then actually
utilize these methods, then I will have to leave the list (which, of course,
means very little to others). This is meant to show that I cannot go along
with with the concept of being on a list solely on one person's criteria,
who may or may not be consistent in his decisions.
If, on the other hand, I am misunderstanding you, would you be willing
to clarify your proposals?

My advice is either to drop the religious aspect of your campaign and
just focus on the priesthoods rather than the gods they represent, or to
flesh out the gods yourself. I generally plan way too far ahead into the
divine scope of things, and so have to flesh out my Gods. (one of my
characters has actually travelled to Mount Celestia and met Haelyn), it
did not go as he expected.

Greetings from an OLD lurker,

I have been a lurker on this list since December of 1996. I have read every
single post of every single day. I have contributed to other people's comments
and have begun my own discussions both on and off topic. I am a teacher 9
months out of the year and during that time I have absolutely no time for any
gaming whatsoever. My other three months usually entails projects around the
house on a daily basis. Also, I live in the buckle of the Bible Belt in
Southeastern Kentucky where gamers are few and far between. (Please, I am not
looking for a pity party) This is the only way that I can be connected to the
fantasy setting I love. If a person kicks me off the list (or even wants to)
because I don't contribute on a daily basis I think that other people should
get kicked off for other inconsequential details, such as quoting all of the
text of another's e-mail. For this reason, I will vote no for Jim Cooper. I
only hope someone has the decency to have an open mind before "coming to power"
over a mailing list that has done a good job running itself, even though I know
this may not always be the case.

Jim - I know you have been on this list for quite a while but GET A GRIP!

Yeah well, I think you should handle deleting subscriptions with care in
any case, even when e-mails bounce more than once. There has been a time
when all my posts to the Spelljammer mailing lists got bounced back to me
(but not after a very large delay) and I'm really thankful the
administrator of that list didn't just deleted me, but instead put those
posts back on the list where they should be, asked me what was wrong (it
turned out to be something odd with my server), and then amended the
situation for me. That's the kind of administrator I like... :)
