I'd have to agree with the political stucture thingy. My PC in FR is
Lord of Shadowdale. Now, asside from the boring "stop the drow" and "oh
no, a ramageing dragon; lets call Elminster," what the hell am I
supposed to do? I any BR kingdom, there are things to do. Whether
working against a much larger foe (The Gorgon, Ghoere), trying to bring
about the downfall of an equal-power neighboor (Alamie vs. Tournen), or
playing hero-kingdom (Muden) there is always something to do. What the
hell is Shadowdale supposed to do? Invade Cormyr? The Dales seem very
odd, there are very powerful neighbors, and yet they still exsist. "But
they have Elminster!" Yeah, what is Elminster supposed to do against
Cormyr's army? It seems that someone would have usurped the throne of
Cormyr or one of its Kings (or whatever) would be evil and invade the
Dales. Lots of good farmland up there to support a rampant army...

Due to it's cumbersuome nature and extremely unrealistic =

Since you brought it up, I will continue this wildly not-BR tangent, =
If only that it makes an interesting debate and I'm bored. Why doesn't =
Cormyr invade? Go check Azoun's alignment. Do you know what LG stands =
for? Great. Let's move on. Dales=3Dhard to invade. 1. They invented =
guerilla warfare, FR-style. That's exactly what Randal Morn is doing =
against the vastly superior Zhentarim presence in Daggerdale. 2. As a =
part of #1, they know the land like nobody's business. 3. If things get =
bad, every farmer and shopkeeper would gladly take up bow or blade =
against an invading force. See also: Braveheart. Now do you see why =
3-4 Levy (possibly Irregulars) units can realistically beat 1-2 units of =
Knights, 1-2 units of archers, and 3-4 units of Infantry (or Elite =
Infantry)? The Dales Strategy 101: "Run. Hide. The highland way." =
"We'll make spears. Hundreds of 'em. Twice as long as a man."
Why can't you fight the Zhentarim like most other Good =
leaders/rulers of the Realms (and especially the Eastern Heartlands)? =
Also, most actions that a BR regent can undertake (aside from the =
building of sources and the usage of Realm (ha ha) spells) could just as =
easily be performed by a leader in FR. Why be a passive ruler?
If that's no good, Shadowdale is one of the best-organized and most =
powerful Dales. If you feel that the Dales are ripe for the plucking, =
what are you waiting for? Most DMs that I know (including myself) would =
love to see a player take that kind of initiative.
