How does one distinguish Tighmaevril form "ordinary" high-quality steel,
other than putting it to the test (ie using it to slay someone with blood
power)? Any thoughts?

Two ways..

Their is the blood ability that was first introduced in the Dungeon Magazine,
and in the book of magecraft their is the spell.

A low level divination spell? There would surely be profit for a mage
who invented a "Detect Tighmaevril" spell. Dwarves and other metal
working races might be able to identify Tighmaevril with the proper
proficiency check(s).

Does this really make sense? Tighmaevril is supposed to be a very
rare, near mythical metal. A simple proficiency check or a low level
spell degrades the rarity of the metal.

Such a spell as "Detect Tighmaevril" would have to be quite costly and
dangerous to research-I think actually possessing some of the metal
would be in order.

It just seems a little too easy for me.

So. Seeing a spell in BoM and a character learning it are two entirely
different things.

There is. 3rd level: Idenify Thighmaevril. From the Book of Magecraft. IMO,
there wouldn't be much money in that since there are only 12 tighmaevril weapons
in exsistance and maybe the same number of items (Ring of Ley, that necklace,
etc). Oh, and 3rd level means a 5th level wizard/magician. Those are kinda hard
to find in BR...

I think thighmaevril is more of a magical material than a mundane one. Perhaps
a good metal worker could determine that it is made of Adamite, and that one
that starts with the "m" (memory lapse?). But there is a certain special
something (elven magic?) that makes tighmaevril more than an exellent alloy.
