I have always been under the impression that the whole point of
trade was to sell your stuff at your destination in order to
acquire stuff to bring back home to sell.

Simply taking goods to a foreign land to sell for cash is not
imho, truly what trade is all about. More importantly I can
not imagine that the authors had any other concept in mind
when they constructed the rule. But I was wrong once before. :)

Thus if you are going split trade routes into incoming & outgoing
cut the income in half since the profit on the return trip has been
lost.

I agree with you, and would maybe go even further and reduce the income with
more than half, since ships or wagons or whatever is used will have to
return back without any profit at all.

Of course you could avoid this by setting up routes so they would always go
with a load, but not back and forth, but in a route between several
provinces.
