View Full Version : Buying vs. Non-buying

While I understand people being upset because their favorite line got put
on hiatus, and I can agree with the "vote with your bucks" sentiment, I
would like to point something out about what some people said about not
purchasing any more TSR product until BR returns.

When BIRTHRIGHT went on hiatus, part of the reason was to be able to shift
the manpower that had been working on it over to other lines--lines that
management hopes will support a wider variety of gamers. This means that
the people who created BIRTHRIGHT and the products you really liked are
still creating new stuff for you to enjoy. Now, everything might not appeal
to you--I'm working almost exclusively on ALTERNITY right now, and you
might not be an SF fan--but if you like the authors and the editors who
worked on BR, I recommend checking out what they are doing on other lines.
Rich Baker was one of the principle ALTERNITY designers. Carrie Bebris is
working on DRAGONLANCE and RAVENLOFT stuff (and maybe some FR). Duane
Maxwell is on STAR*DRIVE, while Anne Brown wrote some of the new GREYHAWK
material.

I bring this up because I think about my favorite authors. One of them,
Glen Cook, wrote a cool book (which turned into a series) called "The Black
Company" (I've mentioned him before). He stopped writing them at some point
and began work on "The Garret Files," a different sort of fantasy series. I
wanted more BC, but I picked up GF because I liked Mr. Cook's writing--and
now I have two series of his that I like (he started writing BC again,
too). If I'd decided to stop reading Glen Cook because he was no longer
writing my favorite series, I would've missed out.

This translates to games very well. Lots of people said "2nd edition?! I
play 1st edition--I'm not buying any more TSR stuff!" Others said
"GREYHAWK/MYSTARA/SPELLJAMMER/AL-QADIM" or whatever "is gone, so I'm not
buying more TSR stuff!" They missed out on BIRTHRIGHT. I think we can all
agree they lost out.

I hope you all continue to support BR. I will; I hope it comes back. I also
hope you'll take a look at some of the ALTERNITY stuff and other material
I'm working on. Maybe you won't like it ... but what if you do? At the very
least, you'll get some new stuff to suck your precious free time away and
I'll get the satisfaction of talking to you on a wider variety of subjects ;-)

Talk to you later!

I think you're right in several ways. I'll use you ;-) as an example author.
I like your work. I "discovered" your work when you did WEG's Shatterzone
stuff. I liked it--so I bought every last book that was published for the
game as it came out. Unfortunately, that one died out, but I did go on to
purchase the entire BR line as it came out since I was confident I'd like it.
After all, Ed Stark had his name on some of the stuff! And I have bought up
some of the Alternity stuff (since BR, I've discovered I like Richard Baker's
stuff, too). So I do try to support the authors I appreciate.

However, I really only have time to run one game a week. And I like fantasy.
This equals Birthright. However, I also believe in the vote with my bucks
thing. Okay, so it failed miserably even though I invested $500 in TORG, $200
in Shatterzone, and I haven't even added up my Birthright investment. But I'm
very stubborn (and I keep reading those old books over and over 'cause I'm a
fanatic). So I won't buy another AD&D product until there is one that will
relate to my Birthright campaign. Can't afford it. Don't want it.

I don't want to hurt TSR financially. I really don't. A dead TSR can't make
new BR stuff. But I feel voting with a buck is the strongest way to send my
message. Such as it is.

Oh well. Maybe I should win $160 million in the lottery and hire my own BR
design team. ;-D

Yup, yup.

I like Ed and Carrie, I really do. They're nice, down to earth folks who
listen to their customers, work hard to produce what they want, and still
balance that with the needs of a large corporation (their bosses) and family
life. Yup, I like um. Despite the fact they ditched on our playtest at
Gen Con. ;) BTW, I'd like any players from Gen Con to critique the Randaxian
style of GMing and his slant on Cerilia- bombs away please!

Back on subject. While I like Bebris and Stark (sounds like a detective team)
and their previous work, I'm a genre man- kind of a gaming curmudgeon. I don't
buy into the vampire or battletech genre, Anime is for teens etc etc. If it's
not BR, or some other genre I can buy into, I don't have the time or inclination to pursue it. I've got the money. Need I mention again (PUL-EEZE GAWD! not
again- no!) that we (a varying and varied group of about 12) didn't play D&D for
10-15 years. Birthright brought us back and got us to drop an estimated $500 on
D&D and BR product. (we needed new core rules too) Until it returns in a form
we can recognize as BR, TSR probably won't see too much money from us. Despite
my personal feelings for Ed and Carrie, there are just too many games and too
little time for me to follow an author into a setting or genre I don't enjoy.

Don't think we won't. We'll have you slaving day and night to make new BR
stuff. If we both win the lottery, say goodbye to any free time you may have
left.

Admittedly I'm a bit recently returned to the list, but I've been an
avid fan of Birthright since it first appeared & had been eagerly
awaiting the fall-winter expansions so suddenly snipped just as they
were about to come out. My question - what happened? and what is the
word (if any) on the release of these products &/or the return of the BR
line?
