This may sound strange but I've had a problem in one of my campaigns.
I've got a character that has effectively taken control of most of the
temples and guilds in his domain through his vassals. Now he's built up a
treasury that I want to knock down but there doesn't seem to be much to
do. I'm not terribly excited about making him hire a massive army for
years on end to continually take a bite out of the treasury.

Does anyone have suggestions on what I could do to make him use up a lot
of excess gold without just making it disappear?

Here's a couple suggestions:

1. Thieves in the night- easy, quick, and can even lead to an adventure or
sidetrack in the game.

2. Natural Disaster- Who's to say there's not a fault line running through
his capital province? This is also a way to knock down the province level(s)
a little. Plus all that money to rebuild and give relief will have to come
from him.

3. Rampaging hoards of monsters and/or brigands- Though its not full blown
war brigands and monsters can cause a lot of trouble. They can disrupt trade
routes, plunder temples, guilds, and generally just cause havoc. Plus, to
keep them at it for a while, you can make it harder than hell to find them.

4. Plague- Ahh... The almighty plague. This is if you really want to take a
chunk out of his bank book. Now, it doesn't have to be the Black Plague, but
a plague is nothing to laugh at. Plus you can start it off small, "Its been
reported this month that more people have been to the healers than usual."
Then the next month... "The number of people sick has drastically increased,
the temples are being flooded with people needing to be cured." If it gets so
far along there will be no one to help run stuff. Money will be lost because
people aren't showing up for work, the fields can't be worked and so people
can't pay their taxes. Then, what should happen but lts. begin to show
septoms. Now they can't work. And, if you really want to be cruel, have the
regents temperature start to go up a tad. ;)

I can imagine a perfect world, free from war and full of love for all people.
And then I can imagine us going in and destroying that world, because they'd
never expect it.

Blow up his capital. :D Thats what I did. :) Soaks up lots 'o GBs in
the clean-up process. This is one of the reasons I'm so adamant about
keeping technology a dominant factor in BR. In my case, some one in
Talinie 'discovered' that black sulphur (oil) could burn ... with
catastrophic results (hehehehe). That's what I was refering to in my
previous post on technology.

Of course, there are many more ideas, but that has been my fav to date.
:D

Oh, btw, my science rules will appear sometime on this list, most likely
when my friend says I get something called 'free time'.

Cheers,
Darren

In our campaign we never handled money in the physical matter. Since the
lands of Anuirea according to the sourcebook is in the age of the renescance
(?) banking organization will handle most of the cashflow. That means that
most regents will see of their gold and such is a banknote.
Now... If a banking House was to go bankrupt, your money would be lost.
Now... If a clerk made an error: "Sorry, but I can't find you accounts, sir."
Now... If someone robbed the banking House.
