View Full Version : Magicians and sources

I have a question: if a blooded magician (not a wizard) somehow takes
control of a source network, he obviously couldn't cast realm spells, but
would he receive regency from the sources?

No... Because he hasn't the connection with land that's necessary to
receive them...

As someone said before; he hasn't the diviner's kit. And I think he
receives the RP because he has bloodline and he's a true mage... (I'm going
to check that and see if he has Realm Spells in the "Ruins..." book..)

Yes, he would. Prime example: The Chamberlain! He rules the City of
Anuire, and is a diviner, which is a form of magician. He gets RP from
ruling the city, but I believe he would also get RP from any sources he
controls since he has a bloodline.

I assume the blooded magician was a character who started out as an unblooded
character, but received his bloodline later as the result of an investiture? I
think such a character would be able to collect RPs from gaining control of a
source, or from gaining control of a province, for that matter. All you need
to be able to collect RPs is a bloodline and a holding that your class is able
to collect them from. The Rulebook doesn't specifically note "Magician" in
Table 14, but I still think a magician would be able to collect regency.
My question is what happens to a magician who later gains a bloodline? Can he
cast true magic? Does he lose his specialization in illusion and divination?
What about his extra weapon proficiencies?
I don't think we can use Rogr Aglondier as an example here. He's certainly a
wizard, but Ruins of Empire is unclear on whether he was even a leveled
character before he received his bloodline. He is described as "a trusted
advisor and apprentice to the blooded count," which implies that he might not
have learned enough about magic to become a first level wizard. That might
have happened only after he received his bloodline.
I think a magician who gains a bloodline is going to have to go through some
changes. That is, if he wants to be able to do things like a wizard does. If
he wants to cast true magic, rule source holdings or cast realm spells. I
think such a magician would have to give up his illusion/divination
specialization and stop learning new weapons. In addition, I might do
something like what happens when a character goes through an alignment change;
knock him down a level to reflect the amount of experience he would have to
gain in order to learn to use his new abilities.
What do you guys think?

I don't think the mnagician will change in any way, with other words he can't
cast true magic nor realm magic, but it shouldn't be impossible for the person
to learn to cast thise magics too. I think it would take a few years to learn
thise skills, and in rule terms I would impaly a XP penalty for the character.
Let say the character needs 5% more XP if she has learned to cast true magic
or realm magic and a 10% penalty if both are learned. In this way the
character will have all the benefits from the magician class, but the blooded
magician still sufferes those learning penalties for none divination/illusion
spells.
