This is one of the prestige classes I am working on for the unnoficial magicians guide and wanted to get some feed back on it.

Court magician

Hit dice: d6
Requirements: lesser arcane magic spellcasting

Alignment: any
Skills: perform (magic) +8 , scry +4 , Knowledge (nobility and royalty) +8
Feats: none
Special: A position at court.

Class Skills: Concentration, knowledge (any), spell craft, scry, alchemy, diplomacy, gather information, perform, read lips, sense motive,

Skill points at each level: 4 + int modifier

Class Base attBonus FortSave RefSave WillSave Special Spells per day
1 +0 +1 +0 +1 Court knowledge +1 level of class
2 +1 +1 +0 +2 Alteration focus +1 +1 level of class
3 +1 +2 +1 +2 Divination focus +1 +1 level of class
4 +2 +3 +1 +2 Bonus feat +1 level of class
5 +2 +3 +1 +2 Alteration focus +2 +1 level of class
6 +3 +4 +2 +3 Divination focus +2 +1 level of class
7 +3 +4 +2 +3 Bonus feat +1 level of class
8 +4 +4 +2 +4 Alteration focus +3 +1 level of class
9 +4 +5 +2 +5 Divination focus +3 +1 level of class
10 +5 +5 +2 +6 Court lore +1 level of class

Class Features:

Weapon and armor proficiency: no additional.

Alteration / divination focus: same as spell focus up to a +3 bonus to each

Bonus feat: any metamagic or from the following list. Master administrator, master diplomat, regent focus, spymaster.

Court knowledge: +2 bonus to gather information, diplomacy and perform

Court lore: This grants you uncanny insight into the workings of the court and how best to manage its resources. Similar to the true seeing spell it grants the ability to see the true intentions of individuals and the true nature of relationships. Court lore only works on those members who have been part of the court for at least a month. This knowledge grants one of two abilities on top of the knowledge its self due to the nature of the knowledge. One an additional court action for free each month due to the ability to better manage the court, or +1 to each standard or court action again down to the better management of the court.

The Alteration/Divination Focus is very similar to Spell Focus (alteration/divination).

This prestige class gives something equivilant to a feat every level, +1 to the spellcasting level, and still most of the advantages of the original class (hp, BAB, and the saves are similar.) The only thing different is the save progression is different.

I am not even sure is lowering the HD to 1d4 and skill points to 2+ would balance this.

The alteration divination focus has the same effect as spell focus but it has half the effect.

It gives something equivelent to a feat every 2-3 levels

This is taken almost wholesale from one of the wotc prestige classes. Prestige classes often turn out to be more powerfull.

The HD and skill points are different as this is for practicioners of lesser magic.

Try reading it again and remeber it is designed for use with lesser magic.

One thing that mayb a better way to say it than lesser arcane spell casting, as isn't a blooded wizard be able to cast anything a magician can cast, is to make the requirement be: non blooded and able to cast arcane magic.

But blooded individuals can be magicians.

It would have to be spellcasters that are restricted to lesser magic by birth or training.

In 3.5 the changed the feat spell focus. It only gives a +1 now. Greater Spell focus only gives another +1. Spell Penetration is a +2.

Have you thought about taking out half of the focus and replace with penetration +1?

Now comes in the problem.

Since blooded individuals (or even elves/half-elves for that matter - they just choose not to usually) can become magicians and everyone can multiclass how does this type of prerequisite become a restriction?

Say a blooded character becomes a magician then gains enough levels to take on the prestige class, then chooses to be a wizard afterwards? Other than the normal power penalties for multiclassing with spell casting classes the chracter gains the best of all worlds here.

Graham are you still using 3.0? Many of the things you are putting together seem to reflect that. When you did the saving throw progressions with the unofficial magician package, and here the listing of alchemy as a class skill. In 3.5 it is now craft (alchemy).

And I agree with you when you say that prestige classes are more powerful than regular classes. In 3.0 WotC made a veiled attempt to try to make them the same in power but quickly created prestige classes that violated this rule. In 3.5 they no longer pretend to make them the same.

What WotC prestige class is this one based on? Please don't tell me it on of the FR ones <_<

The alteration focus is not the same as spell focus. Spell focus does not stack with itself, this does and I assume would stack with spell focus (alteration).

I used the elemental prestige class from the tome of blood.

OK the 3.0 and 3.5 stuf was a mistake I was using the tome of blood

This wouldn't be a problem for me lesser and greater magic are seperate with 1 level of magician and 1 level of wizard you are restricting your self.

That would be covered by the restricted by training bit

Don't use a 3.0 prestige class for a basis for a prestige class using 3.5 rules. The rules have changed and so have the examples.

Not all of the 3.0 prestige classes have been updated into 3.5, try to use a 3.5 prestige class for a comparison - they are much more balanced with each other.

It doesn't realy seam to make much diference.
