View Full Version : Two Questions

Hello,

My first questions concerns the research of realm spells. How is it done?
How long does it take, what are the costs, and the chance of success? I
looked through the Book of Magecraft, but found no info on that (only on
battle spells).

My second question is: exactly what are the twelve original duchies of the
Anuirean Empire? I counted 13: Avanil, Boeruine, Alamie, Ghieste,
Dhalaene, Mhoried, Diemed, Aerenwe, Coeranys, Elinie, Brosengae, Osoerde,
and Taeghas. I think Talinie and Cariele weren't duchies. So which are the
right ones? I have reade the Iron Throne novel, but as always, Simon Hawke
seems to be contradicting other sources and even himself. The map doesn't
seem quite right. I mean Brosengae, a border nation?

Rules I've always used:
1.) Must know a "regular" spell similar to the realm spell first.
2.) Research is exactly as per a regular spell of the same level, except
with the requirement of a sufficient source holding, and 1 GB per spell
level "research components" or 1.5 x the # of GB required to cast the
spell, whichever is higher.

I have no idea what is the correct answer, but it would seem to be likely
that Coeranys was originally wilderness, and therefore not one of the
original duchies. In my game, one of Eluvie Cariele's titles is "Warden of
the Eastern Marches," which dates back to the time when the area was a
wilderness, and rangers patrolled to keep an eye on goblin and gnoll
tribes.

Diemed held what are now the provinces of Ghoried, Caercas, and part of
Fairfield; Aerenwe controlled the rest. Ghieste comprised the current
provinces of Tireste, Ghiere, Rhumannen, and Tornilen; Dhalaene comprised the
others.

Ok; what was Brosengae? I mean, it's small, but I think I remember from
Iron Throne & War that it was a Duchy even back then; Taeghas is currently
a County, and I think it was refered to as such in these novels as well.

If I'm right, then I know that seems counter-intuitive (Taeghas being
bigger & arguably more important), but as we all know, reality, especially
political reality, is often counter-intuitive (I.E., politics asside, would
a rational country elect Clinton prexy, or H. Rodham-Clinton instead? [See,
I'm not even making a partisan point!])

Maybe I'm just too curious for my own good, but....

How did Roesone get the provinces of Abbatuor, Edlin, Duerlin and half of
Fairfield from Aerenwe? The Roesone guide says Daen Roesone unified
Caercas, and defeated the Diemed armies to get the eastern Diemed
provinces, and beat Aerenwe to collect Bellam as surity of peace. But
how did the other provinces leave Aerenwe? True, these provinces were
depopulated, but they were still controlled by Aerenwe, and it doesn't
say that they were unified under Daen. In fact, the Abbatuor section
says it was patrolled by the Aerenwe rangers during the Roesone War of
Independence. Edlin and Duerlin were granted by Daen to vassals for
loyal service, but how did he get them in the first place?
