I've been looking at the Prestige Classes in the archives, and find myself liking the concepts but disturbed by the fact that many of them seem ridiculously over-powered.
For instance, nearly every spellcasting prestige class gains +1 caster level every level in addition to the special powers (every level or two) of the prestige class. War Priest is even worse: +1 caster level every level + special abilities (which make them better military commanders than Fighters!) AND the base attack bonus of a fighter! Whoah...
It is my understanding that prestige classes represent the focus of specialists, not super-powered elites who are better than their equal-level standard class companions. How could a game world, particularly with adventures, keep balanced when options like this are available for the higher-level characters?
There's been discussion of various prestige classes and/or class variants (for clerics especially) going on in the BRCS forum. I hope that whatever gets proposed is done with an eye toward maintaining some sort of balance with current 3.x standards - not over-powered but not under-powered (or overly limited) either. I think the prestige class ideas in the archives are great; but they could definitely use some tempering and down-to-earth adjustments that don't smack of favoritism.
