Would the "big bad wolf" of little red riding hood be an awnsheghlin? I mean how many wolves have the powers of speech?

Not sure if this counts as fable or myth but what about Beorn from the
Hobbit.

It originated as one of the Grimm Borther's "fairy tales."

If it`s the same wolf who had a taste for hog triplets then it might be
just the one....

I think that the "obvious" explaination is being missed - that little red riding hood is actually a druid. Perhaps she is really "The Little Red Riding Hood", an awnshegh of unspeakable power whose exploits have been translated into "fables" to avoid bringing down her wrath. What she did to that poor defenseless wolf.;)

Is he an ersheghlien or a "plain old" werebear?

Beorn and his people aren`t Lycanthropes, they are shapechangers.

That`s JRRT`s term, sure. In the D&D sense, though, would he be anything
more than an advanced werebear? Maybe even one with character levels?

A distinction I don`t recognize in BR. AFAIC, Lycanthropes are a PrC of
Ruornil`s druids. The ultimate protector of the sacred places and source
manifestation in the wild.

They could be natural weres instead of inflicted weres.

They would have more control over their shaping and that extra skill.

Not all weres are cursed, for some it is the guardian of the family/city/whatever.

Beorn was a druid....a keeper of animals and the wild. He was not a
werebear. I wasn`t talking about Birthright.

The origins of Lycanthropes in Birthright interests me. I started a new thread to avoid take this one on a wild tangent :

P.S. in Birthright I could see him as a Druid with a couple levels of
Barbarian and Ranger thrown in.

Does he ever take on any form other than a bear? He has, apparently, many
animals enthralled, but those could be nature oriented cohorts/followers,
not the result of Animal Friendship or charms. Ranger levels I think are
appropriate, but druid levels seems a bit of a stretch.

Didn`t my post on this go through? I had mentioned three days ago (two day
ago?) that Beorn was a druid (though they don`t exist in Middle Earth) with
maybe a level of Ranger and Barbarian thrown in here and there.

Um yes but some of us work 32 hours on friday and saturday. It also seems
on friday and saturday that the mailing list gets a boost of activity with
me having 100+ messages to go through. Thus I answer them as I go. After I
sent my message I saw yours above.

As far as I`m concerned it is a valid question and I thank you for asking.
Even the post using SW for shadow world was a bit difficult to figure out
with no reference but context of its usage to refer to.
