The staff is a beautiful, simple piece, constructed by master carvers in Mesire. It is the symbol of the Wizard of Ilien and is used to channel their magical energy.

Created by Alexea Aglondier, the staff serves as a symbol of regency in Ilien as much as a crown or sword might in another land. Its known abilities are: glowing with magical light, releasing bursts of energy when striking an opponent and channeling power during the casting of some spells.

This is a slim staff of darkwood—a burgundy-colored hardwood from the Direwood in Mesire—is capped with silvered steel ends and run through with silvered steel rods throughout. It has a plain, simple design with a straight grain and no carving in it.

The weapon does not have a magical combat bonus, but it is carefully balanced (masterwork), granting a +1 to hit; its balance is not only designed for attack, but also defense, granting a +2 shield bonus to AC when used defensively.

Magically, the staff serves as a reservoir of magic. The user casts any 0th or 1st level spell into it and the spell is absorbed into it (the spell is removed from the caster's memory, but does not have any effect). The staff can hold up to three 0th and two 1st level spells at a time. As a move action, any of these spells can be dissipated with one of the following effects (user's choice):

• Add 1d3 energy damage to any attack with the staff—if the attack misses, the magic is not dissipated. (0th level spell)
• Add +1 to a DC roll to cast any spell (0th level spell)
• Add 1d4 energy damage to any attack with the staff—if the attack misses, the magic is not dissipated (1st level spell)
• Add +2 to a DC roll to cast any spell (1st level spell)
• A Faerie Fire spell (as per description) centered on one end of the Staff. (1st level spell)

The Staff's spells are retained for four days until they loose coherency and dissolve harmlessly from the staff.

The Staff has the power to open the lock of the Ilien magical treasury and the Spellbook of the Aglondiers when its silvered cap touches the lock and it is held by the recognized regent of Ilien.

A non-magical power of the staff I that it is a well-known symbol of the Aglondiers and those loyal (or enemies) to them tend to react accordingly to the carrier.
