So, I think I'm well on my way to becoming "one" with birthright:
My campaign has started, my players have trundled about Roesone for a while, I've got the obligatory campaign website up and everyone is attending the Wedding of the Peliens and the Belliens - but I've hit a bit of a snag...
In stage two of the adventure there's supposed to be a battle but the "complete" set I got from some dodgy bloke on ebay is missing most of the battle cards (it only included 4 sheets of cards). Does anyone know if there is any scans available so I can print them or suggest a suitable alternative? I'd rather not do it with postits as I think that'll be a bit naff for the player's first experience of massed combat - birthright-style.
Please help!

The new Birthright 3. Edition book (you can download the test version here) has all the stats you need for the battle cards.
You can also donload the "Book of Regency" 2. Edition at the WIzards homepage (classic download). There is "raw" battlecards and also some stats.
It would be very hard to get the original cards legally. They were distributed in different BR-sets, to collect them all you need to have nearly all available ones.

My advice - don`t use warcards. They`re the most unwieldy set of
mass-combat rules ever invented.

My advice - don`t use warcards.
So what's the alternative then?

I like the Warcard system. It's fast and fits perfectly with the Birthright rules (Battle Spells etc.).
If you search for an alternativ, take a look at some new D20 products. The quintessential FIghter from Mongoose e.g. has some rules for mass combat. There are also some other versions in certain fighter books around.

I have never had a problem with the warcards, and I still use them. I don`t
use the mat, in part because many battles I`ve run have been too big. I
converted the combat table to a dice chart. I`ve tweaked what things mean
in the combat (a hit in combat does 10% casualties, units "destroyed" are in
fact routed), but otherwise its a fine system AFAIC.

So have I. I made many minor (and large) modifications over the years,
but stayed true to the original system. Major changes included kicking
out the battle-map, and replacing it with a module-based one (with many
more squares) and making a dice chart. Eventually, we used the card only
for reference, and move counters on a grid, since that saved a lot of
room (there were some memorable battles covering the living room...)
Cheers

James Ruhland came up with some good Battlesystem-type rules.

I like some of your suggestions kgauck, especially the 10% causalties. But what do you mean about making a "dice chart"?

Top row, difference between attacker and defender as it would normally be
calculated with warcards. Side column is die roll (d10). Results are shown
in the chart as they would appear on the war card results chart. Instead of
drawing battle results cards randomly, roll the die.

6 F F F H H H H

8 F H H H H R R
9 H H H H R R D
10 H H H R D D D
This is taken from the warcards battle results and formatted for dice. The
odds are really similar (actual possible outcomes were 1 in 9, I added an
additional no result outcome for all odds (result 1).
