Greetings
whilst looking through my Pc games i found my copy of BR: the gorgon's alliance. Ah ha! thought i, i'll install it and whoop the Gorgon again. When i tried to install it i kept getting this message come up "integer divide by 0"

my pc has windows xp on it (i last played it on Win98)
does anyone know if this is an xp problem or could it be a fault with my disc?
or if it only needs a simple patch to help install it.

Please help.

The Gorgon`s Crown was one of the buggiest games ever made. I played it as
Baruk-Azhik and tried to go on an adventure, and after killing every
monster on the map, I couldn`t win or exit the adventure.

I had this problem repeatedly playing as different domains.

I`ve found a fair number of old games don`t run on XP. You can try setting
the properties of the program (using the windows left click) to emulate an
older form of windows, but it hasn`t worked on all my games, and I haven`t
tried the Gorgon`s Alliance on my current machine. If it doesn`t emulate,
it probably won`t run.

After applying the 1.0.0.4 patch and running it only in a full window
with no other programs running?
It worked for hours without error for me in Windows 95C in this way.

I had problems with installation, too. However, DOS install worked for
me, and then I simply copied the Winbr.exe file. It works now.

Try my solution, everyone, and tell me if you wish to play it
multiplayer :-)

Also make sure you download all compatibility updates.

There is one adventure, in Bindier I believe, when you search for
Regalia of the Empire which was stolen by some bandits and taken to some
old fancy fort. The problem is that the adventure had wrong starting
place, which put you behind a door that is opened by pressing the
switch, and the switch is on the other side of the door :-)

This is fixed by the patch. The patch also improves AI and let`s you and
NPCs gain XP for domain actions and advance in levels.

Sierra is known for releasing incomplete games and then patching them
heavily. Gorgon`s Alliance is a great game, made playable only by the
patch, but cannot replace the real RPG.

Birthright: The Gorgon`s Alliance was/is one of my favorite wargames! I
loved playing the Dwarves and rolling over the Chimera (after making a
treaty with her with a Chaotic Evil rogue I would hire and putting an army
in every province). Muahahahahaha!!!! Grim Graybeard is a badboy on the
adventures too; not to mention having the blood abilities Greater Courage
and Battlewise on the field!!!! I love that game so much that I still play
it to this day.

As for your problem, I have a similar problem in that it says my disk drive
(on my new comp) is not compatible; but it still runs. I have XP too, and
it runs on mine....may want to get another copy if you can.

My BR: Gorgon`s Alliance works fine with no mods at all on my Windows XP,
has only crashed a couple times in all the years I have had it; and even
then it was my computers fault and not the games.

The thing I didn`t like about multi-players is that you couldn`t go on
adventures and you didn`t control the battles at all. But it did give a
more Strategic Level of play to the game, and you had to actually have
decent armies instead of levies on the wings with spell casting NPCs up
front demolishing the enemy...this way I could win by "crush of numbers"
because the enemy couldn`t keep a good enough ratio on the field. Try that
with 12 Levy Units and three NPCs in Multi-play and you will get your arse
handed to you by the other armies!

Tony

P.S.- where are these updates anyway? I didn`t even know there was any kind
of support for the game any more.

When you are installing it don't test your system, because what happens is it's so old that when it tests it the program thinks that the stuff you have can't exist and freaks out. But beyond that does anyone know where I can get the latest patch for this game, and maybe the character and map editors also?

I am having probs with the game, and maybe one of you guys can help. I have tried to install it do dos, and seems to run fine, except that there are no characters on the screen. For example, on the main menu, there is no Create New Game, Options Quit, etc.

Anyone know whats wrong or how I can fix it?

If you have done a DOS install, just copy WINBR.EXE into the directory where you installed it and use this file to run the game. It should work fine now.

Do you actually run it in DOS after intstalling the DOS version? Or do

you try to run the DOS version from Windows?

If you install the DOS version and then start it in Windows you

experience just that error.

Hey, thanks guys, I really appreciate all the help.

Gents,

Because the hardware layer in XP is similar to that of NT it is not responde the way the game expects there for you get the sperious errors (int 0, etc). During the install do not attempt to test, skip it and install. I can run it in full window mode on my machine, but if I attempt to run it in full screen mode I only get 16 colors (annoying). I have not had any other problems with the game, and have won it a couple times at different difficulty settings.

Use of Patch 04 which introduces the DM Toolkit allows multi-empires but no matter what I attempt the DM run empires do not cycle the turn, keep gold/regency counts, or commit any non-free action. Anyone got any ideas I'm all ears -- thanx

I actually got this to work last night in XP. Download the patch before you start. Run the DOS version of the install; navigate via explorer on the CD until you see an MS-DOS icon and click on that. On my machine, it ran in a window but was fine.

Now, after you install, unzip the patch onto the hard drive where the game was installed (probably c: ; I used a different letter drive and it seemed fine).

Then, when you want to run the game, navigate into where you installed the game and look for the birthright win .exe file; I think its winbr.exe. Click on that and away you go.

If you press F2 while playing it seems to run fine in full-screen.

Birthright-the Gorgons alliance. That brings back so many nostalgic memories; I didn’t really mind the bugs on the adventures the ''locate item and teleport'' spells solved all my problems. :P

I personally liked playing as, the mightiest of the twelve duchy’s Alamie very challenging. B)
