Marquis (feminine: Marchioness) is a title among the Anuireans which has come from Brechtür. The term is derived from Markgraf, which is a Graf or Count of a vital border province, and so was given greater authority. This idea has come to Anuire to reflect a Count who has greater prestige and authority by virtue of necessity, as the term originally was used, or simply as a reward or honor.
A Marquis is equal to a Baron in rank.
A Marquis' realm is generally referred to as a marquisate.
