Like his father, Danien Dalmelling, Duncan won fame in war by the defeat of Talinie's enemies in battle. Because of these victories, Duncan was able to marry Áedia Cairbre, heiress of Serimist. Deòrsa Cairbre, the former Earl of Serimist was quite fond of his son-in-law and named Duncan as his heir instead of his own daughter, Áedia because his daughter, a wonderful person, could not march to defend Strathcarron as Duncan has so often done.

Ardvreck is a royal city and charted in such a way that the Earl has very little influence there. As such, the Earl spends most of his time in the eastern upcountry where he can respond to attacks from the Five Peaks. His principle keep is Castle Inchard near Inchard Lake.
