Though moderate in most things, Avanil still follows the ancient Andu traditions when it comes to inheritance, which rules out females. Consequently, Arlen Avan (MAn; Ftr3/Nbl1; Scion of Anduiras, great, 64), Darien’s nephew, is next in line for the throne. The eldest son of the late Lord Noelon Avan, Darien’s younger brother, Arlen is still something of a novice learning at his uncle’s feet. Desperately trying to emulate his father’s charisma, Arlen instead comes off as petulant and unruly. There remains hope for him yet, as he is only in his mid twenties. Arlen has recently completed his training with the army and is an accomplished swordsman. The Prince has recently taken to including Arlen in his council’s in order to teach the young man how to rule.
Arlen's main fear is that his uncle will end the ancient law of primogeniture and pass the realm to his daughter Aubrae - something much more likely if she marries well. Arlen frequently tries to prove himself to his uncle as a result, ensures that examples of failed female inheritances come to his uncles attention (the ancient ways are held less strictly as one descends the social orders). Arlen also seeks to covertly undermine his cousin, while always openly protecting her to ensure that the Prince sees Arlen as a successor who will see to Aubrae's well being.
Arlen's younger, twin brother, is Noelon Avan.
